So the deal is, I can buy the 6850 for $240. I currently have a perfectly fine Q6600 running rock solid 3.2GHZ. Should I buy the QX6850?
n what exactly u think u'll gain?
??????????????????????
yes, resell your q6600 for 150 and you get higher oc with the higher multipler

Is it worth my 239? Or will I gain nothing?
Depends on, how well you know the seller, and how sure the CPU condition is. Thing is, for that CPU, if you look around at the prices, we are talking over $1k, atm. And if that seller is dumb, he could sell it for more, if it actually is in good enough condition or was taking care of properly.
Stick with what you have. Performance increases won't amount to much betweent he two models, and i would NEVER buy a used CPU, EVER!
If you can buy a working QX6850 for $240, its a good buy. But, be aware that a fair number of chips have been damaged by overclockers. So its possible that the chip in question won't clock high at all, or may not even hit its factory specs. Worse, it might be burned out.
As Grimmy wrote, if you know the seller and you know that it is in good working condition, then its a great buy. If this is something sold by an unknown person on ebay, its a total gamble. Only if you can afford to go out the back door and throw the money to the wind does buying used and unknown computer hardware make any sense to me.
I'd suggest you do some research and see what people are getting out of it, that way you can judge if you need the extra 800Mhz-1.2ghz. I don't imagine it'll clock over 4.4Ghz and you might get to 4Ghz.
Running on air, my QX9650 gets too hot for comfort at 4.1ghz, at least too hot for me to be comfortable with. Normally, I run at 3.8ghz, which I think is a pretty good speed for 24/7 use.
Is the OP certain about what CPU he's considering? Aren't there two 6850's by Intel? One being a rather modest C2D and the other being an Extreme quad-core? That price just sounds suspiciously low.
Even if that is a good price, it doesnt seem like there would be any point. I dont think anyone will need to upgrade from q6600+ until next year. Sure you'll get a better 3dmark06 score, but is it really worth the hassle?
Just for clarification, this processor is brand spanking new straight from the Intel factory and it is the QX6850. But from what I gather here, even being a good deal, It wont make a huge difference.

If it's new, buy it and resell it and make a couple hundred bucks!!

Intel Retail Edge ftw!
The chip is new, and is in fact a QX6850.
Retail Edge FTW Indeed! Always making me buy stuff I don't need... Better deals around Christmas anyways. i cant justify the processor even for 239
If nothing else depending on how old your Q6600 is you can run the QX6850 under a fresh warranty for 3 years. Or you can resell it. Factory sealed box AND not stolen for that price is a hard thing to pass up.

Are you on a gigabyte board Sailor? Because if your on a gigabyte you can dynamically overclock it to around 3.8 with CIA@ and now with DES advanced supporting overclocking, it's a nice way to go.
Buy it from Intel then resell and make a profit.
