Are the 2 routers connected using an ethernet cable? What are the IP addresses of each router?

yes.

wrt310n is receiving a dhcp address from wrt56gs

wrt310n= 192.168.1.3
wrt56gs= 192.168.1.1 (local network)
wrt56gs= 69.246.214.115 (internet address)

Change the IP address of the WRT310N to 192.168.2.1.

thanks grump!

i was trying to make it more complicated. i thought i would have to setup a static route between the two routers.
