my desktop hard drive crashed. How do I connect it to my laptop so that I can recover my files? Do I need any data recovery software?

It's unclear exactly what you mean by 'hard drive crashed', but if your hard drive is still operational, something like this adapter would be good for recovering the data. Any hard drive you connect with it will show up like a regular external hard drive, and you can copy any files you want off it.

If your hard drive is not operational (ie. clicking), you will most likely need the services of a professional data recovery service.

Are you talking about external hard drive? if yes, then just attach with USB. If it is still in good condition then you can recover your files otherwise you need a data recovery software to get files from the crashed hard disk. I suggest you to download the data recovery software from - www.fatdatarecovery.net

As far as I am concern your hard drive need data recovery services.
As your question suggest your hard drive is crashed if it happens then you definetly need data recovery service provider like stellar..

Another possibility is to recover your data with the help of some data recovery software.

These two option are only the way to recover your data first one is quite costly while another one is cheaper...
