The 9850 is clearly the best.

When Looking at Phenoms, It's Preferable to get a Model that ends in 50.
This indicates an updated model that resolves some initial problems.

Then just find the highest Model that ends in 50 to determine the fastest.

The next problem, however, is the Wattage.
Not all Mobos support the higher wattage Phenoms.
You may need to select the 9550 which is a lower wattage.

A little research may indicate if the 9850 is supported.

Shanghai will require a new mobo as its 938 pin so AM3. The tested Shanghai is a 2.8GHz that beat the 3.2GHz intel quad. Tester have showed Shanghai CPU-Z at 4GHz. They claim the new 45nm high-k help get the high clocks.

shanghai is a server cpu. anyway, Nahelem still beats it to death, fastest C2Quad is still 30% slower than Nehalem 2-core runnig at 2.66!!!! crazy

and you dont want to mess with Quad core Nahalem running at 3GHZ. let alone 4GHZ!!!

8-core Nehalem @ 3-4GHZ will nail anything from AMD

I'd say you need to go to your motherboard CPU support page.

MSI AM2 nVidia 570 will most likely not support a Phenom. Maybe an X2 6000+ or an X2 6400+ if you are lucky.

You might also get lucky with a 12xx Opty at 2.6-2.8GHz for around $150.

he has a 6000+.

he's looking to move to a quad. I would think w\ a bios update you can make it happen but i could be wrong.

I still have my 6400+ for sale for just $100+ shipping.

he has a 125W 6000+ cpu, m sure he will be fine with any phenom as long as he is not OCing

Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4850 TOXIC 512MB DDR3 TV-OUT/DVI (PCI-E) - Retail

its got custom cooler which should handle heat really well

or u could go for any 4870 or GTX260

am really undecided ! the gtx 260 has larger memory (896MB) which makes it future-proof more than the ati 4870 although the radeon's performance is better than the 260 ! also i found a 9800 gx2 for 290 $

Think about this a few years back, how future proof was a 512MB FX 5800 compared to something like a 256mb 9800XT?

Is this your motherboard? If so it doesn't support the Quad Core or Tri Core Phenoms.

If you want to build a Quad Core AMD Phenom system you will need a new motherboard preferably with the 790FX or 790GX Northbridge chipset and the Southbridge 750.These are designed for ATI graphic cards though.
There is so far only one 790FX,750SB board out so far but I would wait until the ASUS version comes out soon.

790GX Motherboards with the 750SB

The highest end Phenom the 9950 BE has come down in price at newegg by $20 for $215
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103273

The 9850BE is a good choice too and so is the Phenom 9550.
I would avoid the 9600 because of the TLB (bug).
