Hello evry1

i have 2 questions:

first, I want to buy a new screen, and i dont know if my computer can run this. I want to buy 24 inch, for serious gaming. I now have a 8800gt and an amd x2 5000+ and 3 gb ddr2/800.

If this is enough than its ok, and otherwise I want to upgrade my CPU. I now have a MSI K9A2 CF which should support AMD phenom. It has an AMD 790X chipset onboard.

So what u guys think?

8800gt might hold u back on certain games while gaming on 24in monitor...........
cpu seems fine......just OC it to 3GHz and ull be fast enof for gaming on ur monitor

Go ahead and buy that 24" monitor and try it.
Then decide if you need to make any upgrades.
You can always lower your resolution if your frame rates suffer.

My guess is that a vga upgrade will get you more than a cpu upgrade.

Going to 4gb can be a cheap upgrade to gaming, according to a Corsair study.

well 4gb doesnt make any sense for me, cuz im running xp proffesional, which only can handle 32 bit, and no 64, which is required for 4gb ram memory

Isn't there a law against running an 8800gt on a MSI 790FX? :p

I think you will be fine.

However, with a resolution of 19x12 on that 24-inch you are more likely to become GPU bound before the X2 5000+ (at say 3GHz+?) lays down on you.
Good thing those HD4870s are so cheap .... lol

Check this out -
CPU scaling in games with dual & quad core processors

Hold out for the 45nm Phenoms this Fall if you can on the CPU side. If not, a Phenom 9600BE (mine went to 2.7GHz on my MSI 790FX without a sweat on stock volts) will tide you over, fer sure.

But saving that money on the CPU is the wtg (and maybe put it toward that HD4870-lol)
