I will be using it for gaming and school and I also require a printer. Well I need help on choosing better parts and improving my build. Please help. My budget is $2200 maybe a bit more.

More about : build

Well if your budget is 2200, you're better off with an x38 P5E mobo and running 2 4850's in crossfire.
June 27, 2008 1:15:25 AM

Wait nevermind. I realized since I live in NJ, there is tax...My budget is $2000.

You definitely don't need two cpu coolers, and I'm not sure what you plan to do with those Scythe fans, unless you plan to replace some of the Antec 900 case fans.

Also, step up to a 45nm CPU, and follow soGANGSTA's advice with the x38 (or x48) and 2x 4850s in crossfire.
June 27, 2008 1:39:52 AM

That is a great motherboard- the one I have. You can get by however and do great with the Asus P5Q Pro. $149 and has just about everything P5E has with a newer chipset.

Q9450- Q9300 is a poor overclocker and not exactly a good value.

Instead of 2 x 4850 I would start with ONE 4870- $300 and runs all around 9800 GX2. Then if you want to add a second one you can.

PSU: PC Power and Cooling Quad 750
June 27, 2008 1:46:39 AM

Yeah but he should stick with a x38 cause of the 2 pci express x16. Try one 4870 first and later you can get another one to work on your mobo. Don't get the p45 if you plan to Xfire cause those pci express slots are different speeds.
June 27, 2008 1:48:00 AM

What CPU, RAM and heatsink do you guys recommend then? I'll make a new list.
June 27, 2008 1:56:24 AM

whats the difference between 5-5-5-15 and 4-4-4-12?
June 27, 2008 2:00:41 AM

The lower the numbers the tighter the "timings" are the faster the RAM is.

DDR2-800 RAM clocked at 4-4-4-12 can usually downclock to DDR2-667 at 3-3-3-10 or upclocked to 1066 at 5-5-5-15.

Without getting into a highly technical explanation the lower the first number is the better the RAM *should* perform.
June 27, 2008 2:10:27 AM

I would go with the X48 since you have the cash, if you are getting the Q9450 pair it with a Rampage Formula (seems like the best combo).

-I didn't add the GPU because I was unsure of which one I should get. Also
-I'm unsure about the HDD, GPU and the PSU.
-What should I overclock the RAM to?
-The games I will be playing are:
CounterStrike:Source, BattlefieldF2, BattleField2142, OrangeBox(TeamFortress 2 mainly), Crysis(if I can), and maybe BioShock. I'd like to max out whatever I can except Crysis.
-I might go over budget
-Thanks for your help so far.
Didn't see your post there Shadowthor. I'm not sure if I should get a x48.
June 27, 2008 2:22:46 AM

How come you have multiples of everything?
June 27, 2008 2:24:04 AM

What do you mean?
June 27, 2008 2:24:52 AM

you have 2,3,4 of every component you're getting.
June 27, 2008 2:36:22 AM

....Well uhhh I don't really know the problem. Just assume I'm getting one of everything except the 640gb HDD.
Anyways:
-I'm unsure about the HDD, GPU and the PSU.
-What should I overclock the RAM to?
-x38 or x48
Not sure how to fix that multiple things problem though.
June 27, 2008 2:41:07 AM

Why would your total come out to over five thousand dollars lol.
June 27, 2008 2:52:12 AM

...Well uhh I'm getting only one of everything except the HDD and maybe the GPU.
June 27, 2008 3:09:16 AM

I'll post everything out.

Well I guess I'm not going to get any more reponses now. Its tempting to make a new topic but that would be a waste.
June 27, 2008 3:46:21 AM

How much money left in your budget?
June 27, 2008 4:02:53 AM

I'd say $400 maybe a bit more if I push it. Damn warehouse being in NJ and whatnot.
June 27, 2008 4:04:28 AM

hmm youre gonna need about 450 for a p5e and a 4850. 550 if its a 4870.
June 27, 2008 4:07:56 AM

Its $400 (my budget) with a p5e x38.
Any issues with the HDD, RAM, etc?
June 27, 2008 4:14:02 AM

You have 2 HSF in your wish list. ACF7P and Xigmatek. Get the Xigmatek. You should just get one WD6400AAKS unless you need more space or wait RAID. I think RAID isn't worth it at all. Just overclock your Q6600 to 400 x 9 = 3,600 Mhz. Set your memory divider to 1:1 to get 800 Mhz RAM. It will run stock, don't overclock it. You will have to play with voltages or use auto for OC.
June 27, 2008 4:14:03 AM

well then dont hesitate get the 4870. well you have an extra 200 get a 40 dollar 80 gb drive for installing os's so you dont have to backup or wipe your drive if you need to reinstall, just reinstall on that small drive so you dont have to worry about the data on the other drive being erased.
June 27, 2008 4:14:19 AM

I would pair the Q9450 with the Rampage Formula if you are planning to overclock past 3.6ghz
June 27, 2008 4:14:43 AM

Do you plan to RAID those 2 WD6400AAKS?
June 27, 2008 4:15:19 AM

Q9450 has a low multiplier (8 and will require better RAM to OC to 3.6)
Don't do it.
June 27, 2008 4:29:10 AM

I don't recommend RAID. 1 is very fast.

Why do you need 2 hard drives? The WD6400AAKS will do you proud. I have a 1600AAJS.

Any 4870 is good, look at bundle, price, support service, etc. Each card is manufactured by ATI. The companies that sell them just add their sticker and bundle to it.
June 27, 2008 4:32:23 AM

Hmm... point taken. Well... uhh I have paranoia and I wanna make sure which HDD to buy.
Seagate 7200.11
WD6400AAKS
Samsung Spinpoint F1
Should I buy any of the 80gb HDDs? If so, which?
I'm never good at decisions.
June 27, 2008 4:37:05 AM

Get ONE WD6400AAKS!!! Don't sweat HHD, they don't do much except load programs. Any one will do fine. The WD6400AAKS is a solid performer. 92-93MB/sec read/write. Mine is about 60 something/ sec.
June 27, 2008 4:38:30 AM

well he should get an extra smaller for his os and maybe he wants to dual boot. Or, he can partition his drive.
June 27, 2008 4:42:37 AM

I always like to confirm something so that I don't mess up...this being my first build and all. Well hmmm...I hope the RAM is alright. What games do you play?
June 27, 2008 4:43:56 AM

COD4 mostly.
June 27, 2008 4:51:37 AM

People get 2 hard drives only if one is a Raptor or VelociRaptor for games and programs and a big one for OS. No need to get a 80GB for OS.
June 27, 2008 4:55:33 AM

pcgamer12 what games do you play? Thanks for all your help also. I'm getting the q6600 and the xigmatek so oc the cpu to 3.6 ghz what will the temp be with the heatsink and without? Again, thanks again for your help. I tried other forums and by far this has been the most helpful one out of them all. Very quick replys and helpful people
June 27, 2008 5:19:58 AM

COD4. COD2. Crysis. Company of Heroes. Halo 3. Guild Wars. Warcraft 3 Frozen Throne (Dota).
June 27, 2008 5:20:14 AM

no problem. us guys like to help out. have fun building. :)

Not every Q6600 can go 3.6. Mine will, my friends will not push beyond 3.2 with the same cooler. While 3.6 is a nice goal, it is not a 100% guarantee that will you achieve that overclock.
June 27, 2008 4:58:03 PM

Well, I've been hearing that the Antec 900 is cramped and will not have enough room to fit the 4870. Is this true? What would a be a case that would have ample room for my parts?
June 27, 2008 5:09:41 PM

Antec 1200 or some of the bigger CoolerMaster cases. Someone else can you give you exact part numbers.
June 27, 2008 5:12:38 PM

Hmmm...so I should switch my Antec900 for an Antec 1200 or CoolerMaster case? Do you know which models I should choose for CoolerMaster? I'm getting the Arctic Cooling MX-2 for my thermal paste.
June 27, 2008 6:07:22 PM

I was looking at the Cooler Master Stacker 830 and I think I might get it. The problem is that I don't know if the Xigmatek 1283 you recommended will fit...
June 28, 2008 2:46:43 AM

My build so far. No GPUs added.
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx...
Should I wait for the HD4870 on newegg to be restocked or just get 2 HD4850s right noooooow instead? Or should I get one of the nVidia Cards (not sure which)
I'm going with visiontek, diamond or asus(HD4850)
Not sure whether to get ddr2 800 or ddr2 1066
HDD might be too slow.
Possibly change HDD to:

Halp. Maybe I should make a new topic...
June 28, 2008 3:59:54 AM

I can vouch that the 900 is cramp. I also don't like the "Easy to remove HD cages", I do like the fact that they pull out into the front but you have to still unscrew both side panels then four more thumbs screws on each side for each two cages.

Also the fans use regular molex power connectors, so if your board has three pin connectors you will have to buy a adapter to hook it up to, unless you are using a fan controller, Or you can use your PSU but you will not be able to controll it via software.

It comes with only 9 brass stand offs and it uses the hex screws instead of snaps for the expansion card slots. I wish it had snaps..
