I'm kinda new at selecting the parts for a computer. have a general idea, but my searching skills are that of a blind armless man. my price range is about 600 - 750, I pretty much just want it to be able to run "Spore"... well. so what I would like to know is if I need to change my range, and what hardware I should be looking at. Any help would be much appreciated.

Try to get a 8800GT about $140 or even better a 4850 about $200. I assume this is for tower only? Meaning:
-case
-motherboard
-hard drive
-graphics card
-power supply unit
-optical drive
-random access memory
-processor (included heat sink fan)

try building it yourself to get the most performance out of it. I'd start at a budget of $750 and maybe bumping it up to $800 if it means a lot of performance.

I doubt he will be able to afford a 4850. If you can though, it would be great!
Can you specify what you want in the computer? ie: mouse/keyboard/moniter/os needed?

Stuff tossed together from Newegg. New P43/P45 motherboard without reviews or much info though. About $675 after shipping and rebates, but no operating system

^^Looks like a good list. But I have not hear too many good things from biostar. Gigabyte or Asus would be a better choice.
Something like this:

And this memory is more reputable and is the same price:

Everything else looks good though!

You can shave another $60+ by going with a 8800GS GPU which is still a decent card

no arguments about SS changes either.

Saw a Zotac 8800GTS 512 for $146.99 after rebate here. http://fxvideocards.com/ZOTAC-GeFo [...] 16280.html who would have thought such a great card for that price ?

3850's a good video card. match that with a dual core, low capacity hard drive and centurion case or something like that and you could have a winner for fairly cheap.

pretty soon it's going to be very feasible to make a sub-$1000 quad core monster as well..

I was intending to build it myself, and that is just an estimated range for now, I was intending to run vista, not sure which (i was gonna chose that when I am actually spending the money) I figure the keyboard and mouse don't really matter, and I can borrow a temporary monitor from a friend until i can afford a more permanent one. All I care about right now is the tower.

If you can afford it, this is good:

If I were going with the 8800 gs, I think I'd look at something like this one.

Those are overclocked versions of the 8800 gs, according to benchmarks they should be able to run close to the speed of a 9600gt, which is not too much slower than the 8800gt. You may not get as much performance, but then, after rebate your only paying 100 bucks or so.
