I have an Abit KN9 mobo and I currently have a 5200+ windsor CPU in it... I have been able to OC it to about 2.9ghz (from stock 2.6) on the stock cooler... I have a Scythe Infinity on the way, and I'm going to try to OC further when it gets here. My ram is g.skill ddr2-800 and has so far OCed right along with the CPU w/o needing a divider (granted i only up to about 224 max successfully so far)

What I want to know is what AM2 socket CPU is the best if i decide to upgrade it? I want whatever one will OC the furthest and would like some recommendations. I heard that one of them will hit 3.5ghz on air, but i don't remember which... maybe a black edition but i dont remember which.

The best currently is probably the new X2 5400+ BE It should do 3.2 to 3.4Ghz without much trouble. But it depends on the cpu. I had a 5000+BE which needed 1.5V to be stable at 3.2Ghz. Some people could do that on stock voltage. And for $77 shipped from Newegg, the 5400+ BE is a good buy.

i have a 6000+, and at 3.3 GHz, comp wouldnt boot. i left it at 3.25 for a long time, but i got a blue screen, and i switched it back to stock. (expecially cause of the heat. the stock cooler is not for OC'ing!!)

My (no longer in my main rig) old 5000+ BE did 3.1GHz with stock volts. Too bad my new effortlessly E8400 hands it it's ***.

The Windsor is older 90nm tech but the 5400+ BE is the latest Brisbane core at 65W, so with a little bit of an investment in a good cooler, 3.5GHz isn't outrageous. But then water cooling is cheap and easy nowadays so who knows how high you could get on not so crazy voltages.

I can't find a CPU support list but judging from the BIOS update changelog, the KN9 supports 90 nm and 65 nm K8 single-cores and duals- no Phenoms. The fastest CPU would be the X2 6400+, which I have seen some people run at ~3.4 GHz (stock is 3.2 Ghz, so it's a modest OC.) I'd probably stick with the 5200+ Windsor as you won't see much difference between a 2.9 GHz 5200+ and a 3.2-3.4 GHz 6400+, except your wallet is about $150 lighter. If the KN9 supported Phenoms, I'd suggest the Phenom X4 9950 BE as an OC'd 9950 BE will beat an OC'd 6400+ as the Phenom is a K10 and quite a bit faster clock-for-clock than the K8 6400+.
