Buy a GTX 260 or wait for the 4870 X2?

My initial plan was to buy one or two 4850s to go with a new computer I'm going to build before the end of the year (to replace my AMD64 and X800 pro, hahaha).
On the other side, after seeing the previews of the 4870 X2...my jaw dropped! On the other hand, it will probably cost 500$ when it is released, which would amount for almost half of my build! (trying to use only good price/performance components).

Now it gets spicier...I saw a deal for a GTX260 for 284$, and free shipping for the entire order! Since I want to buy a case and other heavy stuff...this may amount to 50$ saved or more.

So my question is..should I settle for the great deal on the GTX 260 (allowing me to have a great build for 1100$, tax and shipping included), or should I wait until the 4870X2 is released so that a) I buy a better but more expensive card, or b) The prices of all ati and cards drop enough to outweight the loss of free shipping.

What do you think? :D

The 4870 512mb is better then the gtx260. If you want a 300 dollar card thats your card, but if you think you will crossfirex in the future don't get it. Wait for the 4870x2 save yourself 100 bucks. Right now if your looking for price/performance ATI is your man, but if you want lots of power nivida wouldn't let you down. Just your wallet:)

Wait for the X2, if only because prices on the GTX series will just keep dropping. By the time the X2 itself is out, you might be able to nab a pair of GTX 260s for the same price. Then again, maybe the X2 will still beat that. Who knows. Either way, it's in your best interest to wait right now. Prices will drop on Nvidia's side, performance will increase on ATI's side and we'll all win by the end of the summer.

Like I said, I can get a GTX 260 for 284$ + free shipping on ENTIRE order...so that's like a 50+$ rebate on top of the already attractive price.
The question in this case isn't GTX260 vs HD4870...it's GTX 260 now, or HD4870X2 later.

What size monitor do you have or going to run? Also what games do you play more nivida based games like unreal, and crysis or ati games like half life 2, team fortress 2? This also determines what card to get. Is this a Intel build or a AMD build? Its very hard to chose a video card when i don't know what environment its going to be put in. Wouldn't it be a bit more future proof if you put a nivida card in a 790i chipset or a ati card in a x48 or 790FX chipset.

In the current climate, great deals are only going to be here today, gone tomorrow, and replaced by better ones. If you can wait a bit, do so.

If you plan some intensive gaming, i would wait for 4870x2, it have much petter performance and will be enough for much longer time in your PC but it will probably cost ~550$. As for rebate on 260, 4-6 weeks until 4870x2 is ready for selling is long enough to get ddiferent good deals and nvidia will probably go lower with price in time as well.
