With a little research the 9800 GTX can be found for practically the same price as some 8800 GTS 512 (G92). Is it still worth getting a 8800 GTS or is the 9800 GTX a better buy?

Actually 4850 and 9800GTX trade off wins. Still, I'd get a 4850 for lower power requirements, ability for mature drivers to make it excel. Also look at 9800GTX+ because of very good OC ability.

+1 for the 4850, its a better choice for like 10 USD more, sometimes cheaper if you can get a rebate.

+1 HD 4850

And CrossFire on the superior (and more popular) P35/P45/X38/X48 chipsets [as opposed to the atrocities nVidia releases - 750i, 780i, 790i].

I'd go for a HD 4850 or even a 4870 if you can afford it.

Also people need to stop saying Nvidia motherboards suck, THEY DON'T! I've had NO problems with mine and I've owned Nvidia boards since the 590i .
(4 total and they work perfectly)

9800 GTX is an OCed 8800 GTS with some exotic features.
Buy whatever is cheaper.

That is it exactly.
You can overclock the 8800GTS 512 to match the 9800GTX easily.
The GTX and 4850 are neck in neck with, in my opinion, a slight lead to the 4850.
Get which ever is cheapest and run with it.

8800GTS 512 for $119.99 after rebate. Much better cooling solution then the HD4850 and fairly close to performance in most games. Can be over clocked and still a very good card. Yes i know the ATI HD4850 is a good card, but no reason to dis another excellent GPU

Check out AnandTechs reviews and compare the 8800GT in SLI to 4850 in CF or some other solutions....and the 8800GTS is a step up from the 8800GT
