Anything long term, I would recommend getting the quad, and overclocking it to 3.0ghz or more.

Mobo - P5Q-Deluxe (If you plan to crossfire, insert x38/x48 mobo)
CPU - Q6600 or Q9550 (The Q9550 had a nice price drop)
Ram - 4 gb of G. Skill Ram or Corsair Ram
Video Card: ATI 4850 or 4870
Hard Drive - WD 640 or Seagate 640 (But dunno how much difference it will be)
DVD-RW : Plextor or LG
Case: P182 or Antec 900
Monitor: Viewsonic
Keyboard: Logitech Combo

^Thats a nice rig. Although case wise I prefer the Thermaltake Xaser VI but its a bit pricey.

I have the Spore Creature Creator and it runs very smoothly on my rig with a Q6600 and a HD2900Pro 1GB. Diablo should do the same.

Wow man you are totaly psychic

I'm in the middle of building a new system and you pretty much named my system spec for spec.

My Q6600 is in the mail to me now but everything else on your list is pretty much put together and waiting for the cpu.

I got the antec p180 case and it is a very nice case. Haven't power anything on yet as I'm waiting for the cpu but I really like this case.

btw the roadmap for blizzard games goes like this:
q4 2008 - WoW:WotLK
h2 2009 - starcraft2
h2 2010 - diablo3 (or possibly later...slightly before duke nukem forever?)

Therefore, it might be wiser to wait a couple more months until nehalem settles in, maybe right after westmere hits and THEN upgrade to a mid-priced nehalem machine then.
That's all depending on your machine though, I totally got tired of my old s939 x2 and upgraded this week (lasting until sandy bridge).
