What do i do when my portable hardware does not register as a removabl

If it's a hard disk, it may not be hot swappable.
If it's a flash drive not appearing:

Right click in an empty part of your taskbar, select PROPERTIES, go to Notification area, then click the CUSTOMIZE button. Scroll down the list until you see the SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE item. Highlight it, and from the drop down list to the right choose Hide When Inactive or always show.
