Recommend cpu for Asus p5w dh deluxe

I'm looking for a new CPU to upgrade from my Pentium D 840. I'm heavily into gaming and i do small amounts of Photoshop and Maya. I want to know which processor i should go for

Specs:
asus p5w dh deluxe mobo
2 gigs of corsair pc6400 800mhz ram
Radeon x1950 pro 512
ultra 600w PSU

I've heard that the core 2 is the way to go for gaming and that quad is more useful for editing and such but i want to make sure that my new CPU will have long term use

With a BIOS update you should be able to run C2Q (q6600) or Penryn processors like a state of the art 45nm 9450 for example. The q6600 is a reasonably priced major upgrade from a Pentium D 840. The e8xxx 45nm dual cores series (E8600 preferably) would be supported also with a BIOS update. Check you ASUS MB product page for CPU's supported. For starters your Pentium D is rated at a 200MHz. FSB and is slow considering a C2D defaults at 266MHz and a Penryn defaults at 333Hz. FSB. Basically your 200MHz processor is doing about 75% of what a Penryn processor will do per clock cycle. So yeah, your board will run these faster processors so an upgrade would be a noticable improvement. A new q6600 can be had for $189 and a q9450 for $299. Either of these processors would be a major upgrade for you. Check your MB's product for CPU/BIOS supported processors. I have two 965 boards (yours is 975 chip) and I run the q6600 and e6600 on them. I also have two pentium D's running currently. A 925 and an 805. Slowness....

Thank you, I know which processers my Mobo will support it will take up to extreme core i made sure it would be able to upgrade for a long time and i was mostly looking at q6600 or a 8500

Yeah q6600 would do real well if your are accustomed to that Pentium D. I have q9450, e8400, q6600 and e6600 all runing. They beat the snot out of my two two Pentium D's. I have the Q6600 on an ASUS P5B-Deluxe P965 right now. My son uses it to game with. The system works flawlesly. I use my two Pentium D's on micro boards as workstations at the ofice. They are slow and hope I never have to reload them again LOL.

I recommend Q6600 or Q6700 (I have this one).

45nm dual or quad-core have problems with this board.

They are not fully supported.

Sometimes these ASUS links do not work, but OP's MB supports 45nm processors including Q9450 and E8600. This would be with a BIOS update, but the processors are supported and will work. I would also recommend the Q6600, I have it running on my P5B-Deluxe and it runs very well. I'm sure your 975 would run the processor equally well.

Though the recent bios versions state that Q9450 will work, it is not stable. (from what I've read on the ASUS forums, the voltage being supplied to the CPU is not correct and the bios doesn't permit you to select the right voltage. People are having to underclock to run stable.)

Yeah, ASUS uses a 'soft' or BIOS update often to support new processors instead of releasing so many MB revisions (like Gigabyte). Often, a soft update is sufficient, but I can understand something like VR's not being up to the task. So, I think the Q6600 would be the way to go for OP. Should run flawlessly hopefully.

BTW, I don't have or have experience with the Intel 975 chipset. I have two boards using the 965. The 965 is the better chip of the two from my understanding. I have not installed my E8400 or Q9450 on the 965's. My E6600 and Q6600 run great, no problem with VR's at 266MHz.

Thanks guys, i figured out really quickly that asus update is pointless and i dont think ive updated bios yet so ill probably do that before i buy. so it looks like im looking at the q6600 which is what i planned in the first place but i heard that the core2 was worth a look so just wanted to clarify
