Hi new to the forum but frequent tom's hardware often. I'm planning a budget upgrade later this year, I'm thinking of a amd x2 5400BE, along with new mobo/ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103289). I have 2 8800gt's but am not using sli (planning to sell one to cover some of the cost), would this cpu be able to run sli without bottlenecking? I also have the option, through evga's step up program, to step up to a 9800gtx-would the 5400 x2 be able to roll with this gpu (at 1440x900 resolution) without bottlecking?
Also would a 5400BE/8800gt be good enough for warhead (I understand its optimized for better performance but want to be sure I have some "cushion" for future games), or should I step up to a 9800gtx.
Bottlnecking a CPU is blown wildly out of proportion. That cpu will run any game out there at more than acceptable framerates. If you feel you aren't taking full advantage of your card(s) though, consider increasing visual quality as apposed to over the top framerates. That is what will allow you to take full advantage of a graphics card. In older titles, if you are already maxed on IQ, then the arguement becomes an academic one, as you will already be getting excellent framerates.
So yes, a 5400BE would be an excellent choice for a cpu, and allows a terrific upgrade path to future processors. I'm not sure which MB you are looking at, but consider an AM2+ with 750 southbridge.
As for gfx card, if it were me, i'd step up to a 9800gtx and still sell one 8800gt to cover the cost. Win win situation there. GL!
