My Jornada 720 speakers have not played sound since yesterday. However
everything works fine through the speaker jack. I have entered the
diagnostic mode and run tests, and cannot get anything to play.

My J720 also face a similar problem. Seems to be some connection problem.
While playing some MP3 songs at max volume, flip to tbe bottom and try
pressing the area around the speaker holes firmly.

The clamshell design has some flaws and one of them is likely a loose
connection to the speaker somehow. My J720 does this all the time and
it usually happens if I have it open and move the device around,
imparting some loads to the hinge. The sound just goes out.
Normally what I do to "fix" it is to open and close the clamshell to
try and reset the connection. Then I click on the settings icon on
the right side of the screen to bring up the volume properties. Then
I just drag the slider left and right until the sound miraculously
comes back. At that point it seems to be ok until I fiddle with the
hinge again and it goes out.
This happens mostly when holding it. If it's open but on a desktop,
this usually doesn't cause a problem.
