It depends on if WAR supports DX10. I would get Vista anyways because games will probably start using it a lot more for better graphics.

I do not believe War Hammer is a DX10(.1) game. Saying that, it wont matter or not if you have a DX10(.1) card because you are running in DX9. But, newer cards will give better picture quality and ATi has been known to have better color representation.

I agree with efx92. Get Vista anyway. You may not like it at first, but understand that it is a new OS and not XP. If you go into it with an open mind and ready to learn a new OS, you will love it. If you want it to be XP v2 then you wont like it. Vista is overall better than XP.

There are a few games coming out that will be DX10(.1) compliant. Other than Crysis, Assassins Creed, Bioshock, UT3 that are already out; Star Craft 2, Diablo 2, Guild Wars 2, Spore, and more are coming out that will be DX10(.1) ready as well. So getting a DX10(.1) card is well worth it. For $900 I would get two Radeon HD4870 and cross fire them if you can. If not, wait for the HD4870x2 (that will run about $450 and smash the Nvidia GTX280).

If you allready have a license for XP - I don't see a need to upgrade just yet - DX9 (XP) support will be with us for many a year yet... And the difference in image quality is not much...

But the performance penalty you take for activating all the dx10 eyecandy is substantial in most games.

True, but that’s the point of getting a card powerful enough to handle all the eye-candy. If we didn't care about eye-candy, we would still be playing text based games on a pea-green monitor. DX10 does make other things look better too. If you play Crysis in DX9 mode, rocks which are apart of the group texture look like they are just a texture on the ground. In DX10 mode, they pop out and become 3d and look like real objects. DX10 give more natural looks to things and really helps with a closer to real life effects and game play. This was a very basic example, without mentioning that it brought unified architectures are the default architecture.

No need to dual boot unless you are playing some of the older games/old software.Anything current gets pretty much = fps in xp or vista if the same settings are used.
