so i own a 8800gts (g92) with a resolution at 1680x1050 and was wondering if it is worth the three hundred or so dollars to upgrade and get a 260 gtx or an hd 4870 i dont have an sli mobo i have an asus maximus formula that is capable of crossfire
The HD 4870 would be a better upgrade than the GTX 260, however with your card and resolution being what it is, I'm not sure it's worth it for you to upgrade to them. I'd say hang onto your money and save up a bit more and see what the 4870X2 can do for you.
Another option is that you could get an SLI mobo, buy another 8800GTS and SLI the two together. You could probably do that for about the same price as getting an HD 4870 or a GTX 260 and you'd have an SLI capable Mobo.

Dont agree that the 4870 is better than gtx 260, if your going to overclock it aint.
An overclocked gtx 260 beats gtx 280.
I would get an evga one, overclock it to the hills with the great evga precision overclocking tool and take advantage of the step up program and get the dual based gt 200 in a few months.
