Just built a new system about a month ago. For couple weeks things seem to run ok and then now it's in alot of problems(stability/OS install failure/update failure). There were couple driver issues right when i built the system. One on going issue is that Alot of times i have trouble installing ATI drivers. I would have to install the driver first and CCC afterwards. But now, when i try to install CCC it says that the file is corrupted and cannot be used to install.

And for awhile my computer would give random BSOD although I did not change a thing in my bios. When I entered my bios, turns out my memory was running at ~1.85V when it was rated to run at 2.0-2.1. After a reboot(without changing the Voltage), the voltage jumpted to 2.19V! I thought the bios could be faulty, so I flashed my bios from 308 to 410 and manually timed my memory to 2.0V. However, when I monitor my memory voltage it says that it is running at 2.06. I thought the difference between what I set as the memory voltage and the actually voltage to be way too off...Could this be a motherboard problem? or PSU?

AFter the fresh install of OS (vista 64x) the computer would immediately start the update and starts downloading/installing the update. But soon, vista would report (windows update module has stopped working) and the update process would pretty much hang at same place forever. When I try to reboot, once again, the vista would go into the blue screen saying that the computer is updating/installing...forcing me to force reboot/shut off the system.

I switched the hard drive thinking that it might be a bad hard drive but the problem persists. I'm starting to think that it might be the mobo even...

My computer spec is:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 CPU, stock speed, Xigmatek HDT-S1283 heatsink
ASUS X48 Rampage Formula
VisionTek Radeon HD4870 512MB at Stock speed
2 x 2GB GSkill F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK DDR2 1066 (stock:5-5-5-15)
Seagate Barracuda 250GBB 7200RPM SATA 3.0Gb/S
ASUS 20X DVD+/-R DVD Burner (SATA)
PC Power&Cooling Silencer 750W PSU
NZXT Tempest Case
Windows Vista Ultimate SP1

I would put a psu tester on that psu that reads the voltages and make sure they are within specs. A bad psu can sometimes have a fluctuating voltage that would cause random readings.

Run memtest86+ for a few cycles to verify that all of the ram is ok.

Voltage fluctuations are a PSU problem, and are impossible to avoid - in fact, you can't avoid them wherever you use power. No power signal will be perfectly clean, it will always fluctuate. However, higher quality products provide cleaner signals.

Anyway, your voltage on your memory seems fine, if it's rated for 2.0-2.1v, as 2.0<2.06<2.1. You should have set it manually from the beginning, however.

Anyway, I agree with geofelt, it seems to be a memory problem you're having. It's always worth it to reseat your RAM, CPU, and GPU if that doesn't work.

Come back with memtest results.

thank you geofelt/frozenlead. you guys were right. Upon starting the memtest86+, I was bombarded with over 10000 (not joking) error red lines. And only about 5% of the memory passed the test. Hopefully i'm interpreting the program right. I am filling out the RMA form for the memory as we speak right now. It might take awhile because I lost the plastic cover for the memory box and that i might have to deal with the manufacturer itself. I might go pick up another memory to test out meanwhile. I'm still bothered how it worked fine for a month and started giving me trouble now :(

However, my other question is. Can a bad memory module really effect other vista pogram(update module/installe module etc)? And sometimes random installer program wouldn't start saying that it is corrupt.

There's not much interpretation needed. If under the Error section, if anything other than a 0 shows up, it's time to get new memory.
That voltage setting may have damaged the modules somehow.

Microsoft makes a memory testing program too, search their site for it, it's not too bad. But if memtest fails, those modules are likely bad.

A bad ram module can wreak havoc on a machine. One of my friends bought some cheap ram for his athlon 64 machine a few years ago - when almost every file in the windows XP setup failed to copy, he pretty much freaked. I got over to him and ran memtest, and i think less than 5% passed, actually.

You might think that if windows can start loading, that ram would be ok. But, as more parts of windows gets loaded into ram, more ram modules come into play, and if those areas are defective you get problems.

ahhh. thank you :). yeah i just picked up some corsairs memories thats suppose to work with rampage formula (TWIN2X4096-6400C5 G). I manually set the voltage right off the bet when I started up the system (rated to run at with 1.90V; and it was automatically set at ~1.95V). I really hope i don't have to change my PSU because i spent alot of time cable managing :(. I am installing Vista 32bit from the scratch and i will keep you guys updated. I really appreciate you guys' help. thanks

so amazingly, everything i installed without any crash/problem/corruption from start to finish! :bounce: But still the DRAM voltage i manually set as 1.9 is running at 1.94. I'm afraid that this will eventually destroy the new pair of memory. Upon looking at the bios, I found an option that says "DRAM CONTROLLER VOLTAGE REF". If i change it to the "Reference" instead of Auto will the voltage be what I set it as?
