Backup Palm?
Last response: in Cell Phones & Smartphones

I've currently got a Samsung Palm phone (i300) with my PC using Outlook (and
Dataviz)
I've also got a Tungsten E -- is there a way to use this as a "backup" of
the same data in Outook? I assume that if I plug this E into the machine and
attempt a hotsync operation it should ask my user name, and it should work.
But can I go back and forth with 2 handhelds on the same machine with the
same data?
I'm very paranoid about my data and don't want to experiment with this
unless there's some possibility of success.

As long as the hotsync name is different for the two handhelds, there is no
problem. The Palm desktop will keep completely separate files for them. If
you try to use the same name on both, you're in for trouble.

But that¹s exactly the opposite of what I want to do.... I've got ONE set of
files in Outlook that I want on TWO palm handheld computers..... I'm not
trying to use two handhelds on one computer with separate data for each....

try this....
when you gonna backup your data in the Tungsten E, change first the
direction of the sync to make "PC overwrite handheld first" in the hotsync
options...... when finish return the option to "handheld overwrite PC"

So I can have the same user name on both units, and on the "backup" one,
just set the conduits so that PC overwrites handheld...
That sounds like that should work
Anyone see problems here?

No, that's exactly what you want to do. When you sync your Palm to Outlook,
a separate file is maintained in your Palm directory with the data, one for
each Palm. Giving them the same hotsync name will cause data corruption.
Give them separate names, and then hotsync each, and they will both sync with
Outlook, provided you've set them up that way. I don't use Outlook because
of the security issues that Microsoft admits they can't solve, but that works
for everyone else. Check the PalmOne site for detailed information.

So I have a unique user name for each handheld, but both sync to Outlook? I
guess I'm getting confused on the logic of all this. I know I can't sync to
the same Palm Desktop data, but maybe that's possible with Outlook....

Yes. You're begging for data corruption. You should never sync two Palms
with the same name to the same desktop, regardless of the hotsync manager
settings.

That's DEFINITELY the one thing I do NOT want....
How about if I synchronise the main one, copy the data from Palm Desktop to
the other user, then sync that one? Problem there is that the first one uses
Outlook and Dataviz, and the 2nd one should only go to Palm Desktop. I think
Desktop To Go can choose for each user where to synch.....
So, do the sync with the primary device, copy the dat files to the other
user name, set DTG to sync that user to Palm Desktop, then sync the 2nd
device.... How does that sound?

The hotsync manager can do this automagically. You can sync as many Palms as
you like to the same PC, and sync the address books to whatever you want -
Palm Desktop, Outlook, Lotus Organizer, Yahoo web, or whatever. All that is
kept track of using the hotsync names.

Just give the Palms different names, and hotsync them. The new one will
automatically sync with the Palm desktop, unless you install a different
conduit.

But typically a new user name will have a new set of data.... User1, for
example, could be me with tons of stuff. I add a new handheld with a
different user name (User2) and it has separate calendar, datebook, etc. and
isn't touching the data for User1.
I'm after User1 data on BOTH devices......

But unless I'm missing something you're saying, differnent user names can go
to the same data. I know I can have multiple users, but each has his own
separate calendar, addressbook, etc. all handled by hotsync. I'm after using
the SAME data for both of the handhelds.

Now I'm confused. You said above that one will sync to Outlook and one to
Palm Desktop. If you want both Palms to have exactly the same data, then
you've got problems. You're guaranteed to get corrupted data eventually, if
not immediately, if you try to sync 2 Palms with the same name.
You can use different names, and copy the backup file from the first to the
backup folder of the second, perhaps, but what you want to do isn't really
possible, unless I'm still confused about what you want - and that's
certainly possible.

That's the way I understand it, but I admit to not using Outlook. I won't

If you're using the Palm Desktop:
- set one user as the Master
- sync one Palm to the Master
- In the Palm Desktop, manually export the data from Master to a file
- then, still in the Palm Desktop, manually import that data into your
secondary user
- sync your secondary user's Palm.

Let me elaborate a little... I have a samsung i300 phone -- runs Palm OS. I
sync to a PC. I've also got a Mac powerbook and the Samsung can NOT connect
to it (serial connection, and several serial to usb things I've tried
haven't worked).
I figured IF I could get the data from the Samsung phone to the Tungsten E
on the PC, then I could sync the Tungsten to the Powerbook and get the data
there. This also gives a backup of the handheld by having it on the Tungsten
E identical with the data on the Samsung.
So -- my primary device is the Samsung phone. I want the data from the PC
(in Outlook, with auto backup to Palm Desktop) to get to the powerbook very
often. I know there's scripts that can convert Outlook to Entourage, etc.
but I don't want to have to do this every few days. I thought there ought to
be a way to do this with the two handhelds.....
(Or I could ditch the Samsung and get a new phone with Palm OS, but that's a
more expensive solution)

E identical with the data on the Samsung.
So -- my primary device is the Samsung phone. I want the data from the PC
(in Outlook, with auto backup to Palm Desktop) to get to the powerbook very
often. I know there's scripts that can convert Outlook to Entourage, etc.
but I don't want to have to do this every few days. I thought there ought to
be a way to do this with the two handhelds.....
(Or I could ditch the Samsung and get a new phone with Palm OS, but that's a
more expensive solution)

If I just copied the calendar.dat and contacts.dat (or whatever they're
called) from the Master user in Palm Desktop to the other user, would this
work, or is there something in the data itself that identifies the user?

Oh, Lord, you're throwing in a phone AND a Mac? I'm throwing in the towel.
Good luck.
