I just installed a new geforce 8600gts in my dell dimension 8400. The dimension comes with a 350 watt power supply and has a free 6 pin connector that i plugged directly into the graphics card (the cable was black and white and came straight from the psu and didn't attach to anything... i'm not sure if this was right to do).

My cpu powered up fine but then i got a black screen with white text saying:
Drive 4 not found: Parallel ATA, PATA-0 (PRI IDE MASTER)
Drive 5 not found: Parrelle ATA, PATA-1 (PRI IDE SLAVE)

i can hit f1 to continue or f2 to see bios

if i hit f1, the computer functions as normal except i have NO cd drive at all. It's like it never existed.

if i hit f2 i see this under drivers:
drive 0 = hard drive 160gb
drive 1-3 = OFF
drive 4-5 = ON

the cd drive worked perfectly fine before i put in the new vid card (although I did drop it off at a computer repair shop for diagnostics to see what the problem was which turned out to be my vid card shorted out which is why i installed this new one).

Also - my cd drive lights up like its going to work when i put in a cd.

thank you

ps - i updated all my drivers

It could be that your current power supply is not powerful enough for everything to work now that you've got the new graphics card installed. Just a guess.

thats my guess.... a 350w power supply is old school, and the 8600GTS' do use quite a bit of power. Make sure you have all the cables attached correctly as well...
