Hi i'm new to graphics cards and have just bought a brand new XFX GeForce 8800 GT 512MB Alpha Dog and was wondering if this is a good card. :??:

Also what settings would i use to play Crysis?

My pc specs are as follows:

INTEL CORE 2 QUAD 9.6 GHZ Q6600 8MB CACHE 1066 MHZ
4096 MB DDR2

I am also running Windows XP 32 so am also only usin 2 GB of the RAM

Thanks for your help.

that card is good. i finished crysis on it.

as long as you wont play in very high resolution 16x10. it wont be a problem with "high/very high" settings. although at some intense scene ull feel the fps drop. otherwise, you wont feel it most of the time.

With two of those I just set everything to 'high', easy really. :sol:

Thanks guys for your replys. I only have one graphics card mousemonkey so will I still be able to play it in high at the resolution night_wolf suggested?

You'll be able to play Crysis on all "high" settings well enough at 1680x1050, with maybe a couple of settings (textures, water) at very high. Of course you have XP so you'll have to edit the config files to go beyond "high".

Reply to homerdog

I don't see why not, if night_wolf _in can then there is no reason why you couldn't do the same but as mentioned it will bog down on occasion which is more likely due to the game being badly coded rather than the graphic card not being powerful enough.

Wow, 9.6ghz, you have the fastest computer I've ever seen....!
That card is kinda week for Crysis but you can play, I doubt all on high settings though.

It's a Quad processor all 4 processors at 2.4ghz. I'm no computer buff but i'm guessing it all ads up to 9.6ghz as it was advertised on ebay when i bought it.

I'm guessing your being sarcastic or a are wee bit jealous? If if you dont believe me take a look a look:

a quad core processor at 2.4GHz per core definitely does not equal 9.6GHz. The person selling it is an idiot.
Most people buy that processor because it is overclockable, which is the same reason they don't buy an ECS motherboard, and it would've been nice to have at least 800MHz memory. Looks like the builder cut a few corners, but in the end as long as you get a good video card - it'll do more than you want it to do.

and just a random thought, just something for you to ponder - I like to figure out if something is a good deal or not before I buy it as opposed to after. But that's just me.

Well I knew that i was going to have to pay £277 inc postage for a comp with 4gb memory a quad processor and 500gb hdd so I would say that was a VERY good deal. Plus it's better than the crappy Dell pc you would get from PC World for more money.

Just to add MrMan01 whats wrong with the ECS mother board? Wont i be able to overclock the processor with that motherboard and if so which one would you reccomend. As I said I said at the start of the thread I aint no tech wizard.

It doesn't work like that I'm afraid, would be nice if it did though.

Rite one more thing. I was reading on TomsHardware about overclocking my graphics card and it said the DDR3 was crucial. My comp is DDR2 and the graphics card is GDDR3. So will the graphics card still work on my computer.

If it helps think of the 'G' as denoting graphic card and as such it has nothing to do with DDR1, 2 or 3 and will work fine.

lol isn't 277 pound like 500 bucks or something... you can get a q6600 @ 2.4 ghz.... NOT 9.6... they don't add up.... and 4 GB of ram.... and a 500 gb hard drive for like 350...

which is considerably less... so in short

YOU GOT SCAMMED

You need to check out prices in the UK a bit more whilst keeping it mind that currency exchange rates can have no bearing on the price items are sold for in different countries.

Couldn't of answered him better myself mousemonkey

So I asked asked you a question about the ram on my pc (DDR2) and that of the graphics card (DDR3) and if I will be able to use the graphics card on my PC with DDR2.

So...

in U.S. prices
~200 for Q6600
~100 for P35 mobo
~85 for Memory
~90 for HDD
~30 for DVD burner
~50 for PSU
~90 for OS

I believe that's not such a scam, though the guy did skimp on a few things, but of course he did he's trying to make money selling a cheap PC.

Memory for the system and the memory for the graphics card have nothing to do with each other. You'll have no problems throwing an 8800GT in there, as long as the PSU can handle it.

as i said. resolution smaller than 1680x1050 (i played it with everything very high with 12x7) will run almost smoothly with the config change to very high, only at rare occasions.

bout 16x10. i cant say. coz i didnt try that with my GT.

Oh my goodness... is it too late to buy a Dell?

Reply to homerdog

OK thanks Pedro.

Just to say if any other american wants to say how bad I got ripped off they should come live in britain just to see how much everything is, most things with 17.5 VAT (Value Added Tax). We are rated only behind Norway as the most expensive country.

For £669!!! Now that's a scam.

I'd never ever buy a Dell. I had as Dell laptop and it f**ked up. I think Michael Dell is an absolute ****.

Reply to rowben86

Considering you live in Britain I guess that isn't too bad of a deal. However I highly suggest you do not buy computer parts from ebay. You may end up getting some "lemon" parts and have no means of returning them.

Meanwhile the server hosting this website and enabling you to post messages is most likely a Dell. :-)
