Hi ,

I am getting an i7 920 D0 with an evga x58 mainboard tomorrow and i wanted to o'c it to 4.0ghz

I've never o'c any processor before ...so can anyone tell me the procedures to o'c the i7 920 D0 to 4ghz safely ..i Have a CoolerMaster V8 cpu cooler

Also how to set the QPI to 6.4gt/s

Help for the ram as well...My ram is @ 1600mhz while the i7 920 support 1066mhz...

Thanks

Help plzzzzzzzz..

Reply to Viruzzz

just push the base clock to 200Mhz with speedstep off and the voltage set to 1.212v

the ram will adjust to about 1600Mhz with this OC.

Is a program needed ...or how to access it from the bios

Thanks helloworld_98

No the v8 is not enough for 4.0ghz underload, 4.0ghz at idle , even at 3.5 underload you will see temps above max with any air cooler on the market. if you want low temps at high overclocks think about water or phase depending on your budget. here is my i7 @ 4.5ghz (40c-60c) 24/7

4GHz on air might be pushing a bit, yet 3.5GHz is certainly possible..I have mine on 3.5 with a Hyper Z600 (dual fan) and my load temperatures are around 75C hottest core (ambient 26C)

i thought the D0 version could go easily to 4.0 oon air...

If i add 2 more 120mm fans to the sides of the v8 ..would it be better ?

Reply to Viruzzz

^ you can't add fans to the v8.

and D0's can hit 4Ghz easily, if you have a huge case and a nice cooler, it also helps if you clear the dust from the filters quite often aswell.

I went to the bios..i put ( dummy overclocking - on )

I changed only the ram setting to xmp 1 ..it automatically o'c my processor to 3.2ghz..but the pc keeps restarting.
My processor and ram are running @ default settings

How to o'c my i7 to 3.2ghz atleast and ram to 1600mhz safely ?

Is there any good and reliable program to check the temperature of all my parts ?

On the mainboard there is a cpu temp display ..

When i first put it ..it stayed 23 for a few seconds then went on drastically to 45 , 72 , 85
FInally it remains @ 7F

What does the 7F means...?

I installed a vista ultimate x64 and had some problems :

1 . Cant get resolution above 1280*1024

I thought it was the screen but i had managed to get better resolution on an xp x64
Viewsonic 17'' monitor
Screen was VGa only so i had to use the DVI converter that came with the sapphire radeon hd4890

2. When stating pc and running 3d benchmark ..both detects all my hard disks bt when i click on my computer i get only the ocz vertex and 1 WD 1tb
When i should be getting 1 ocz vertex and 3 WD hard disk

3. Should i stick with vista or use the latest windows 7 Rc x64 ?

What other difference bet windows x86 and x64 except that the x32 detects only 4gb ram?

Thanks

wow thats a lot of issues! slow down a minute!

1. to determine a stable overclock do this.....

2.reset your bios to optimized default and start from the begining...

3.start by disabling the HT then the Speedstep/turbo...

4.manual set your multiplier to 20x200= to get 4.0ghz...

5.make sure your memory is set to 2:8=200x8=1600mhz...

6.dont use the xmp yet just leave memory settings on auto...

7. now start with Vcore@ 1.3v and memory@ 1.6v....

8. if you have memtest option in bios ...enable it...

9.save and exit bios...if you have memtest enabled see if it passes.

10. if it passes restart go back in to bios and disable the memtest.

11.now save exit and see if it will start in windows.

12.get a good temp program such as realtemp or coretemp.

13.use cpuz and see what your memory is set at.

14.use hwmonitor to see what all your voltages and temps are.

15.then run prime95 and see if its stable, but watch your temps!

Build finished but i am having some problems..

My sapphire hd4890 toxic runs extremely hot and get BSOD....i'll test my ram

Hey i dnt have the memtest in the bios ...how to test the ram ?

Reply to Viruzzz

Sapphire Hd4890 toxic :40-45 degrees idle....

Processor :20(all fans high)-23( fans low) degrees idle ...40 degrees( fans high)- 44 degrees ( fans low) when running prime95

The processor is running @ 2.6ghz and ram @ 1066mhz
What temperature can i expect to o'c the i7 920 ( D0 version) to 4ghz and ram to 1600mhz(stock)

I think the asus xonar essence stx was not compatible with the system as i removed the card and everything is working fine...Though graphics sucks a bit..

I used 3dmark ...and got 27fps before for the GPU test 1 ..now i am getting 10-12 fps...Why is that ?

Can you send me the links for the memtest 86 ...or is it not necessary as the prime95 check the ram i think...It has been running for an hour now and all test have passed ...

Thanks

I am also having storage problems......
I have an ocz vertex 60gb and 3 WD caviar black 1tb
WHen i boot it detects all hardware and even when i used HWmonitor it shows the temp of the 3 WD...
But when i explore MY COMPUTER ...There is only 1 ocz vertex 60gb and 1 WD black 1TB
When there should have been 1 ocz vertex and 3 WD black 1TB

Thanks man..you've been of a great help....

I only need to find out why the asus xonar is not working properly....

Anyways everything ok now...i even let the system on for the night with prime95 running and temp 40 degrees without any problems....

I am currently using the motherboard audio

you never overclock before, you want to go 4Ghz? well, it depend on luck, i overclock cpu since 80286, but recently i got a D0 920, and it only go stable at 3GHz. anything above that, not 100% stable. benchmark stable only up to 3.6, 24/7 stable only 3.

gap between 3 to 4 is like zillion light year away.

can the processor handle 3.2ghz 24/7 with coolermaster v8 ?

I've never o'c before and i dnt want to ruin my system...Is there any software for the o'c safely while not increasing voltages etc....as i tried o'c from the bios using the ( dummy o'c feature ) ad pc kept restarting....I'll try what you said later on but 4.0 seems impossible ....3.2ghz would be ok for me

I have the EVGA E-LEET but i dnt know how to use it....

Between is that normal :

On HWmonitor it shows the temp of all 4 cores and each of them is 35-40 degrees when the temperaure display on the mainboard shows 23 degrees ..

Reply to Viruzzz

Viruzzzz; if I were you I'd be paying a local tech to do it for you. Also; start with a very very small overclock and use that for a week to test for stability; then gradually up it as your able to.

Thanks......Could you plz tell me how to do this through the bios without increasing the voltage too high...
I am using an EVGA E757 and a coolermaster v8

i'll o'c to 3.2ghz and i need to set my ram to 1600mhz as well

Thanks.between reinstalled the asus xonar and it works...

only problems it shows only 2 speakers when i have a 5.1 setup and only 2 speakers works

The real problem was with the mainboard ..the 1st and 2nd pci slot worked well giving 43 degrees for my hd4890 ...but when i put it in the 3rd pci slot ..it did not detect the card ...the resolution was very low and the heat pipes on the hd4890 could have been well over 100 degrees .....

I had to use the 2nd slot but the graphic card is really close to my asus xonar but still temp was increased by only 1 degrees...so no real problem yet...

Is the problem really with the mainboard or the 3rd pci slot should not have been used for graphic card ?

There are 4 pci slots on the mainboard

I meant ...is it possible that the 3rd slot was not made for graphic cards as the temp was really very high...the heat pipes were burning hot ....in the 2nd slot it is much less hot ...

Is it a problem with the board ?

Reply to Viruzzz

Well i was planning to add another card later on and if the board is faulty...i could RMA it..

ok . pc working great...

FOR o'c now :

What temps are safe for an i7 920
Right now i am @ 22 idle ..40 under load
What voltages are safe for an i7 920

i'll o;c only to 3.2ghz ( to be safer )

Should i turn off hypertreading and turbo mode ?
Does that mean i will have only 4 logical cores instead of 8 ?

Is it worth it to go to 3.2ghz with hypertreading and turbo mode off ( if necessary ) or to leave the processor @ 2.6ghz with hyper and tubo on ?

bump........

Also ..about internet explorer and firefox :

In internet explorer 7 i open lots of tabs and if there is a pic ..i click open in new tabs and it opens just beside the site i was viewing ..
In ie 8 ..it opens in the last tabs and i have to go to the lst tab and back again to where i was...

Is there a fix for this ?

"Right now i am @ 22 idle ..40 under load"

With a v8?

Using coretemp or realtemp? Sounds like its giving you fake info.

Using hwmonitor each core is around 39 degrees ...but on the mainboard display screen it shows 30 degrees normal ...19 degrees idle...Havn't gone above 40 yet...

Hi ....I finally o'c the processor...

@ 3.19ghz running prime95 : 53 degrees (v8 low speed), 46 degrees ( v8 max speed)

I cant get my ram to 1600mhz...i keep getting blue screen with physical dumping etc...

It is currently @ 1333 mhz

Why cant i get 1600mhz ?

What is better :

1600mhz with normal latency

or

1066mhz with low latency ?

Reply to Viruzzz
- 0 +

Is that normal :

DRAM frequency : 798 MHZ
FSB: DRAM 2:10
CAS LATENCY 11.0 CLOCKS
RAS TO CAS DELAY 11 CLOCKS
RAS PRECHARGE 11 CLOCKS
CYCLE TIME 28 CLOCKS
REFRESH CMD DELAY 88 CLOCKS
COMMAND RATE 1T

ISNT THE CAS LATENCEY A LITTLE TOO HIGH.....

CORSAIR DOMINATOR 1600MHZ...CAS LATENCY 8

by memory ratio did you mean 1600mhz 2:12

O'c sucks :D

the only way i can get 1600mhz witn 8-8-8-24 is to leave the processor @ 2.6ghz with xmp profile 1

If i o'c to 3.2ghz like now ....1600mhz doesnt work at all....1300mhz cas latency 11-11-11-28

Current o'c :

processor @ 3.24ghz vcore 1.275v
Memory @ 1066mhz 9-9-9-24 dimm 1.6v

Is there any way to get 3.2 - 3.4ghz with memory 1600mhz ( 8-8-8-24 )

Current temp : 26 degrees idle .. 45 degrees with prime95
( all fans low )

Reply to Viruzzz

Whats better :

i7 920 @ stock with memory @ 1600mhz 8-8-8-24 (1.65v )
or
i7 920 3.2ghz(1.275v) with memory @ 1066mhz 9-9-9-24 (1.5v)

is that normal :

my graphic card temps has increased by 3-4 degrees and my hardisks by 5-6 degrees

Yep , only a few minor details :

1.In internet explorer 7 i open a lot of tabs ..if there is a pic in one of them , i click open in new tab and it opens just beside the site i was viewing...In IE8 , it opens in the last tab and i have to go back and forth everytime....Is there a fix for this ?

2. A few times my ocz vertex makes a small screeching noise and pc freezes for 1-2 seconds..is that normal ?

3.Is there any better (faster )program like nero vision to convert AVI, WMV movies and burn directly to a dvd ?

Anyway if you need any full version software ..let me know..
You've been of great help
Thanks

LOl did what you said ...Ram 1066mhz ( 8-8-8-24) 1.64v, processor 3.7ghz (vcore 1.22v) ..temperature around 54-55 degrees running prime95 ( v8 low )
