Help my Verizon Treo 600 stayed connected for 5000 minutes. You can
imagine the bill at$.40 a pop.
I did not surf these minutes. I've surfed about 60 minutes since owning
the phone. I read in one forum that the Treo will connect by itself if
left on.. for things like software updates etc. What's the deal with this?
Any ideas on how to get Verizon to forgive the 5000 minutes?
Any ideas what caused a connection?
I am absolutely 100% positive it was not me.
It doesn't seem proper (or legal) that their equipment can just turn on
and connect without user permission each time. What's to stop them from
continuously connecting with software updates to rack up the charge-able
minutes. There's just something wrong here.
I am wits end here. I simply am devstated by the bill. My wife called
Cust. Service with no luck. I will call tomorrow. Any advice or insight
is appreciated.

Follow-up for those interested: Verizon admitted a problem with the Treo
600. It will automatically stay on-line after any session where data was
transferred. You have to power it down and re-power to disconnect a
session. Another option is to go down a few menus and select disconnect.
Pretty cheesy on the Treo's part if you ask me. If they don't have a
software update coming out to correct this, I may sell the phone.
GOOD NEWS: Verizon says they will credit me the entire amount!! The
credit needs higher level approval due to the amount, but it is expected
to clear. I won't count my chickens until they are hatched (when the
credit is on a printed bill in my hand in December).. but so far I am VERY
PLEASED with the way Verizon has handled this.
The failure to disconnect issue.. I don't know if that is a Treo or
Verizon fault. Such a shame. The phone is slick in so many
other respects! Poor engineering.

Well I must say that I am glad for anyone who beats a $2000 bill for
overages. But I must add, that this is NOT a common issue or concern for the
TREO 600 that I know of. It is one of the most popular and deired phones out
there, and I have yet to hear this complaint from anywhere., I frequent the
Palm newsgroups daily, as well as the major web sites, Palm Info Center,
Palm Addicts, Treo Centtral, BrightHand to name a few. (You may also notice
that you didnt get alotta sympathetic chiming in on the issue) I have never
seen this brought up. So I may be wrong, but I wouldnt be too hard on the
Treo 600 and maybe look a bit harder at the operator with a new unit and was
caught off guard. At some point in time, that phone was connected for over 3
1/2 days, someone should have noticed something was going on some where.
Anyway, good luck, but dont hold your breath for a software patch to address
this issue anytime soon.

Interesting that it is not a common problem. Could be that I have a bad
unit.
Or, I wonder if it's a shared Verizon/Treo problem. I distinctly heard
the the Customer Service supervisor in the background: he said Treo 600
maintained a connection unless the wireless was powered down; or
disconnect was selected from the menu in the browser. Gave me the
impression of a known issue.
One thing is for certain: I'm reluctant to use this as an everyday phone.
Which is a shame, because I really liked it, and it cost me about $500.

According to an article in the Nov. 1 issue of U.S. News & World Report,
661,000 Treos were sold in the first year after introduction. Verizon
began selling them this summer (after thousands signed an online
petition begging them to do so, according to the article). So if the
problem you encountered were due to a fundmental flaw in either the
device or Verizon, I'd sure expect there would have been a big hue and
cry by now.
Incidentally, I've had Verizon phone and DSL service for years now, and
have been extremely pleased with their technical and customer service.
That was a major factor in my recently signing up with them for cell
phone service.

Roy... if I get my credit, I also will be very happy with Verizon customer
service. Their promise of a credit is very encouraging.. and when the
promise is delivered on paper I will sing Verizon praises until the cows
come home. Because at that point their Customer Service will have
delivered, and they easily have the best signal in my town bar none.
Regardless, there is a problem somewhere within Treo 600/Verizon. My
post (which I don't know how to link to here) in the alt.cellular.verizon
newsgroup has been up for one day, and another user had the same issue as
me to the tune of 1600 minutes.
Maybe it's not a "fundamental" issue as you say, and maybe it's not "hue
and cry" magnitude.. but there is undoubtedly a problem.
