I just built my own computer for the first time and have decided i want to overclock it to get more out of it.
My components are an

Intel core i7 920 cpu
ATI Radeon Hd 4870 gpu
6g(3x2g) Corsair Dominator 1666mhz RAM
Asus P6T Deleuxe v2 mobo

I have never done anything like this before and any information on what precautions i need to take, what software i should have doing this(ex. temp monitoring) or how i should go about doing this would be great.

what cooler have you got?

and what stepping i7 have you got?

because if you have a good aftermarket cooler and a D0 stepping, you could get above 4.5Ghz, but if you have the stock cooler and a C0 you'd be lucky to get an overclock at all.

I have a Baram cooler and im not sure what you mean by stepping i7

Don't worry about stepping. Begin to overclock by reading a lot. Find forums that discuss it a lot, read examples, be careful with your temps.

You'll find out about stepping as you begin to read and research. Google is your friend. Hint 'i7 920 Asus P6T'

alright do you have any suggestions for good sites or forums or is google my best bet.
