Hello, i was looking for a possible upgrade of my current Pentium D 915, (2.8Ghz)
I have an ASRock Motherboard
it says: - LGA 775 for Intel® Dual Core Core™ 2 Extreme / Core™ 2 Duo / Pentium® D / Pentium® 4 / Celeron® D
- FSB 1066/800/533 MHz - Supports Hyper-Threading Technology - Supports Untied Overclocking Technology - Supports EM64T CPU

I would prefer a CPU for around £150-250... (more on the 150-200 side tho)
At the moment i have a 700W PSU, HD3870@857/1134 from 777/1126 (was looking to possibly X-fire this with another or buy a 4850 when someone said a CPU upgrade maybe better), 2GB Ram (6400)

So, is there any potential good upgrades or would i have to buy a new mobo? (which could then basically mean a new system :heink:) - For example is a Q6600 any good and would it work? it says Core2X as stated above is acceptable or anything better that's worth it?

If you need any more info just ask me to post it :) Thanks for your time.

Looking at that list I would say the best CPU for you is one of the CoreDuo's, according to that list Grimmy put up quad core is out for you :( sorry.

Thanks (couldn't find the link anywhere til i had a proper look myself lol)... So an E6700(2 duo 2.66) would be better than my D 915 (2.8) and E6600 (2 duo 2.4) better also? Sounds odd for lower speeds :P (sorry im a bit of a newbie) if not i suppose i could go for the X6800 if my PSU can handle it. Do you know if it can or anyway how to find out except buying then testing?

Edit: and Idd.. it is a bit sad but oh well, might get a new mobo next year depending on prices/what's needed/all differenciating factors...

Yes. D 915 and E6600 are not apples to apples. They are different, they shouldn't be compared for equal ghz speed.

and

Yes. PSU should be able to handle it.

Clock for clock, the Core2 CPUs absolutely SMOKE the PentiumD's, so dont worry about the speed being "slower". As for your power supply, your 700w should have no problem with the X6800.

Pentium D = fast cars long narrow roads
Core 2 = Fast cars on freeway

see the difference... more cars can fit on freeway

------------------------------ Intel Pentium 4 630 3.0Ghz Shuttle XPC SB81P(intel 915G)
Patriot Dual Channel 2GB DDR400: Raid0 640GB 2pc WD3200AAJS

yeah i was just double checking to see if there was a HUGE difference, appantly there is :P... i would be gaining around 0.5 from each processor i think? so a 3.8 i would have needed as a PD?

Although, now i've decided to get a new motherboard + cpu which will cost around £400~ total... not sure when to get them.. sometime between now and march i'd suppose

New parts:
Motherboard: Maximus II Formula - It has everything i need and room for expansion.. like 2xPCIE2 slots one at 16 and one at 8 so i could crossfire 2xPCIE16 cards in there easily if i decide to... Not to mention my RAM would just about squeeze in at 800Mhz (6400) so that should be cool...
CPU: E8600 - Quad doesn't seem that good for gaming so... and it's a pretty big Core 2 duo which shouldn't bottleneck anything
