What would be the cheapest CPU I could buy that wouldn't be a bottleneck for an X38 board, 4GB DDR2, anything else I should list? What do you guys think. Budget Build

This is $50.00. What are you using your computer for?

I didn't know X38 and budget could fit into the same sentence but anyway... what other hardware? Video card and PSU in particular, and don't forget to mention your uses for this PC as suggested above.

EDIT: Bah, look what happens when I leave a window open for too long without replying.

E7200 Wolfdale for around $120 would probably be the best bang for your buck gaming-wise from Intel, though the E8400 would be a close second at around $170.

haha well yea its sort of budget but upgradeable at the same time. I kno I'm gonna get one of the new CPUs from Intel when they come out so I dont want to go an buy a nice quad core I just need something to get the job done. As far as a video card I'm probably going with 4850. PSU I'm not sure of yet but I plan for CF and 10k hard drives

I'd go for an E2160 or E2180 pentium dual core (C2D in disguise) then ramp it up to 3.0ghz with an overclock. That'll sort out your game for you, and it costs less than your weekly commute

When the new Intel CPU come out, they will not fit on your mobo. Nehalem needs a new mobo because of new socket and IMC.

E7200 is good, better E8400...

And budget does not fit in the same sentence with "10K hard drives..." also

E7200 + X38 is awesome. Check my sig out.

I am not a very experienced OCer, but i still got this system hoppin fast.

I score 16800 on 3dmark and i get 130FPS consistantly on COD4 on max setting @ 1680x1050.

to hit 3.8G, I am running 400Mhz fsb, 1.33v. Temps stay under 55c.

If i were building now, i would get a 4850 instead of 2 3870s. Otherwise i wouldnt change anything.

The X38 can be a budget build. Maybe on the higher end of midrange but still doable. Mine was under a $1000.

The CPU doesn't bottleneck the mobo, it bottlenecks the VGA.

How cheap is cheap, what's your budget?

more or less specifically to burst your bubble, but you know that nehalem processers are going to require an entire new motherboard?
(anyway e2160 OC'd to 3.0 is really good value for money)

a pentium dual core sounds like the perfect cpu for you. you can find them very cheap. but i don't understand why you have an X38 motherboard for a budget build.

wtf its not exactly a budget build but I'm not trying to go all out. trying to make it future proof. And I never said I'm getting nehalem. Yes everyone knows its a new socket but I'm counting on them not discontinuing 775. And if anything I'll wait for price drops.

Don't bother, it can't be done to any reasonable extent.

LGA775 goes out with Core i7. They'll probably continue to manufacture current LGA775 chips for a while afterwards, and motherboards for even longer, but it's likely no new chips will be released.

For gaming, I wouldn't go any lower than an E5200. It has twice the cache of the E2x00 (very important for gaming), is clocked higher and should overclock better, being a 45nm chip.

the E5200 will be out by the end of august and will retail for $84 USD - Running at 200 x 12.5 and can easily run 4ghz with 320 clock with 1.38-1.4v ^^ I'm getting one as soon as its available
