I recently built my new computer about 2 months ago
CPU- Q9300
GPU - 2x 9800 GTX KO
790i Mobo
Arctic Freezer pro 7 Heatsink
I overclocked the q9300 from 2.5 to 3.2 with mild voltage increase
anyway my temps to begin with were really good 52 under 100% load while running prime
about 2 weeks ago my temps just increased from 52 to 65-68 under 70% load - gaming etc- i hadnt touched settings since install and original overclock - honestly i had hardley messed with the computer because of work and being so busy it just pretty much sat idle
was under my original budget so i went ahead and got the new Xigmatex S1283 heatsink
installed it and temps didnt move
still getting 64-66 while gaming so i unclocked it to 3.0 and reduced the voltage 2 notches running prime it gets up to 80 C
ive reseated the processor 2-3 times
reseated the S1283 several times
even when i go to Bios and set it to default settings temps are still really high around the 60-62C under load
why did my temps increase so much so suddenly with no apparant reason
Is that a cooler with a backing plate?? (Sorry I can't remember). I gather the push pin heatsinks can cause problems on socket 775.
What is you thermal paste? (I currently mainly stick to MX2 personally.)
What is a "modest" voltage increase (come on don't be shy!!) The 45nm CPUs are really sensitive to overvolting I understand...
What is the case airflow like? Is your room temperature higher then it was previously?? Have you tried running a big fan (9"-12" house fan) into the side of the case with the side panel off? This is a good test for problems with case airflow...!!
You've got a lot of heat generating components in there with those SLI MB.
Default factory settings on my CPU voltage were set to 1.2375 with vdroop bringing it down to 1.200
i increased it to 1.3000 with vdrop bring it down to 1.25 to acheive the 3.2ghz overclock
I am using Arctic Silver 5 paste
and i bought the backplate with the S1283
room temperature hasnt changed if anything it has gotten colder
i messed with case cooling and made sure fans were facing the right way etc also increased case cooling a little bit by adding one more 80mm fan, i have actually tried using the house fan next to the case both in blowing out and blowing in
the GPUs do get hot but only about 65 C under 100% load even with the OC
but when the computer is on i can definatley feel a huge difference in room temperature than when it is not on, and the majority of it is coming from the side window blow hole right above the CPU
Uhmmm that is a low enough Vcore. If the CPU is dumping a lot more heat into the heatsink then you really do have a problem... Couldn't be the AS5 curing or something? Otherwise could be a defective CPU? Does just sound like a weak die that's got damaged by a mild overclock... That sounds very hot for a Penryn... I mean I kept my old P4 Prescott @3.6Ghz at 60C with aircooling at full load!!

I would go over to the XtremeSystems Forums: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/index.php That are specialist overclockers that will help you much more than here on THG... The 45nm process CPUs have all kinds of oddities which a regular joe like me wouldn't know about... (I haven't even used one in a system let alone built with it!!)

I don't believe its the cure time it needs. The cure time would only allow perhaps 2C cooler temps at the most, but I never saw that change on any of my setups. I use MX-2 which doesn't have a cure time.
It just sounds like the 4 pin setup isn't keeping the HS flush with the CPU. That is even if the 4 pins are secure correctly.
Only advice I have, is to be sure when you take it off, that the handles are turned the opposite of the arrows. Be sure that the black pins are fully pulled out of the white clamps. Clean off the thermal grease to reapply. When you put the HS back on, be sure the white clamps are fully through the holes, and push on the pin that gave you the most trouble first.
Once that is done, if you can, look on the back side of the MB to verify that they are:
I personally use HS with a back plate. My ZeroTherm NV 120 so far has been used on 2 different MB with a Q6600, and my old Tuniq is still working great on my E4400 setup.
