Hey all, I have a hardware issue that I just can't seem to figure out. I put together a PC for my son from some of my spare parts. They all worked great before I stopped using them (Oct 07).
When I put the parts together and fired it up, I got beep errors. It was 1 short beep, contantly. From what I could find out, it may be an issue with the power supply or motherboard. Here is where it gets a little odd.
I took the CPU (Athlon 64 3000+) and put it in a different MB (First MB was a Chaintech VNF4-Ultra, second is a Gigabyte) and used a different power supply. Once again I got the same beep errors.
After swapping parts in and out, I found that if I use only 1 stick of RAM, no beeps and the mobo fires right up. THinking on stick was back, I removed it and put in another. Worked fine. I then removed the RAM and put in 2 sticks of different RAM. Got the beep errors. Pulled one out and it works.
The RAM I was using, in pairs were OCZ and Corsair. The RAM modules match. I used to use both of the OCZ's on this set up. Before that I used to use the Corsair.
Now, what could cause 2 different MB's to only be able to use one stick of RAM? Is it possible that, when both sticks are in, the Dual Channel functionality is not getting enough from the PSU? Or, is it possible that something is messed up on the CPU that will not allow more than one stick of RAM?
I have spent weeks trying to figure this one out and still am clueless.
