Cheap too.. $239.99

Awesome :D

Now when does the 4870 1GB come out :D

Reply to cjl

Cool. 1GB is a little excessive for a HD4850 but it sure can't hurt.

Reply to homerdog

$240 is cheap?

I bet there isn't a dime of difference in performance over the 512 model @ 1680X1050, and it costs about 75% more. Even if you do get a 5% difference at high res, is it really worth the price? At $240 I'd rather save up for an HD4870.

Reply to bardia

When are the OC versions of the HD4870 coming out? Thats something I want to snag.

Reply to mf2385

It has a better cooling solution but... that is just a little bit priced high If it were like 200 It would be a steal, since the original cost about 165 with rebate.

Reply to kelfen

The cooler would be the same if you took off the extra plastic. its similar to what EVGA does.

Still doesn't vent itself outside the case.

Fail.

I don't really care where the heat goes. I'll replace my whole system before the heat actually kills or degrades my hardware. I have great airflow in my system so I'm not too worried.

Bingo, 4870 is worth the extra ~$50.

Reply to homerdog

i think the price should go down in two weeks time...and mf2 is right, waiting for that mythical factory overclocked 4870atomic edition might be something worth waiting for...

Reply to eklipz330

I bet the gigabyte version makes an excellent home theater card. It already scores just below the 4870 on the cinemark bench (if that's any indication).

EDIT: It also supports Open GL 2.1. That could be exciting for linux users considering the standards performance ranks below an 8800 gt in that area.

Expensive.

You're a fool if you think $240 is cheap - another $10 and you can get a 4870. I know which one I would rather.

Reply to NarwhaleAu

dual slot would be nice....nice to see something other than the red cover over the HS though

4800 are getting more expensive than we though uh?
you wont see significant boost with another 512mb memory. and it's still DDR3

Reply to concrum

^I thought you would've been banned by now... where have all the mods gone :(

Reply to homerdog

Considering that I paid $265 with free shipping for a 4870 yesterday I dont think that $240 with $9 shipping is all that great of a price for a 4850 beit 1gb or not. If it had a new cooling solution and was OC'd that would make it more worth it, but still should probably be more like $200 - $220 imo. Just my two cents.

Best,

So, any discernable difference between this and a normal 4850 in terms of cooling or performance or has no one tested yet?

Reply to mathiasschnell

^I haven't seen any reviews yet. The cooler is far more interesting to me than the extra 512MB. RV770's memory management incredible.

Reply to homerdog

Its not much different. its like the stock cooler with a new top cover added.

See the pics above.

^Yeah I just saw that... pretty boring.

Reply to homerdog

There's also a 512mb Toxic 4850 up as well http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814102760 , still not the cooler I'd want, but its an improvement I assume. But what's up with all the cd's that come with this, free game perhaps?

Reply to tonyn84

Keep in mind that the card just came out. The HD 4870's were $310+$7 shipping when they came out. Everything's more expensive when they just come out, regardless of what it is. Teflon pans were expensive when they came out, Under Armour shoes were/are expensive when they came out. I won't be surprised to see that card retailing for $180-$190 in less then a week.

Well i had the old VF700 and it removed heat so fast(since the heat was gone fast the air off it was cooler and had less effect on the case temps) that i did not notice an increase in case temp. That cooler we well suited to the card.

SAPPHIRE seems to be way ahead of the others on bringing out non-ref cards.

Reply to gmanvbva

Yeah, but that's one hell of an expensive zelman type cooler. It would be cheaper to buy a regular 4850 and zelman vf-900 than the sapphire one. Unless there is something else in that package that adds to the expense that I'm not seeing.

A warranty?

Reply to cjl

Sapphire has a 2 year warranty.

Oh, you mean a lot like the DDR3 that's in your supposedly stat of the art 280? So why the extra 512 there then?

Also, if you looked at any of the pricing, the 4800's are super cheap, as low as 150 for the 4850 and 250 for the 4870...

Reply to cokenbeer

I wouldn't pay any more than £10 ($20) for a 1 gig version.

Reply to lameness

I would assume you mean $20 more. :)

I am wanting to see if they are going to release a 4870 OC 1GB. Oh and wasn't there something about the card makers being able to use non referance boards which would allow for more radicle designs in the future?
