My current hard drive is a IDE and I get many BSOD. I was wondering if I were to get a SATA drive and use that as my main hard drive and slave the IDE, would I still get BSOD because of the IDE drive?

BSOD may be a software problem. Load a Linux LiveCD. If it works fine, it's just a software problem.
The IDE drive would still be master on the cable with a SATA drive present. You could use it as a storage drive as you say. I doubt you would get any BSOD using it as a storage drive.
