I've read to avoid them unless there's a problem. I've also read to update it before trying to OC.

It's not necessary unless your motherboard doesn't support your CPU very well or has problems with overclocking. In that case you should update.

Tip: Make sure you have a good cooler.

Twoboxer hit the proverbial nail of the proverbial head. Check the manufacturer's site to see what a particular BIOS update is supposed to fix.
