I have a phenom II X2 550 BE, a gigabyte GA MA770T UD3P motherboard, and some G.Skill ram. I unlocked my CPU to 4 cores. It's now a phenom II X4 B50 running at 3.1Ghz stock speed. I overclocked it to 3.6 and can't get it any higher. I'm sure the problem is because I'm currently running on a stock cooler. When I overclocked it to 3.7Ghz the computer would shut down during the first CPU test in 3DMark 06. I've read about people overclocking the same CPU up to 3.8Ghz without raising voltage settings on the CPU. Again I'm sure my problem is the cooler because my CPU usually idles at 44-46 Celsius (on stock speed).

Anyway, any recommendations? I would appreciate it...thanx

How'd you unlock the cores... is it safe to to so... pls help..

It's hard to overheat this low power cpu. Tom's hardware couldn't get the unlocked four cores over 3.4 and could only get two cores to 3.7. Looks like you got a nice chip.

Yes, it is safe to unlock the cores (At least in my opinion) I have read and heard of many people having success in unlocking cores on this CPU. And I haven't heard of any failures yet. If you don't believe me, look through the reviews on this CPU on Newegg.com

In order to unlock the cores you need a SB750 motherboard or a motherboard that has the ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) option. My motherboard is the gigabyte GA MA770T UD3P and it didn't have an option to unlock cores. But an update had that option. On normal motherboards with ACC, to unlock cores you need to set the ACC to Auto. But on gigabyte boards there's an option called EC Firmware, and you have to change it to hybrid and set the ACC to Auto. Here is more information on that http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/c [...] x2_15.html

I unlocked all four cores and overclocked to 3.8... But I really just think it depends on the one you have because some have the ability to go that high and some don't...

What are you settings Videl? I doubt your B50 can't reach 3.8Ghz stable.....

You unlocked? High five man!!!
Isn't it awesome having such a nice CPU for such little cost?

Edit: I said you need an SB750 board to unlock but a lot of SB710 boards also unlock...and btw my GA MA770T UD3P is actually an SB710 board with a bios update to unlock cores (version f2c)

That was a while ago when I got this great CPU and started playing with it...I was running on stock cooler too...
Now I have a cooler master V8 on that chip...I should post up a picture soon...
I can get it 3.8 stable easily now...like I said earlier it wouldn't be stable @3.8 stock voltage...
And you have to start adding voltage somewhere at 3.5 - 3.6Ghz to get it stable...
I can even get it to 4Ghz...but not higher for some reason :(
Oh well, 4Ghz on a unlocked chip is really nice IMO!!!
I only spent $100 on it!!! It's awesome!!! :)

yup, I get 4.050Ghz (1.47v) and NB @ 1.45v , anything over that is unstable no matter what I do.....

but again.... for 99.99$ with free shipping is simply amazing.....

^That is why I love AMD! :) :p
btw I had to add more voltage than you (1.525V) to get it stable at 4Ghz, but that's probably because all the cores are unlocked and it needs more power to run...and I didn't raise my NB voltage...I should try that next...

^I know! LOL! :p

Maybe sometime in the future I'll get an SB750 board with 2 pci x16 slots...

im waiting on the new boards to come out, so we will have to wait n see what AMD will bring to the table once the core i5's hit the shelves....

Same here...I wanna see what AMD throws at Intel...They have to make something better/newer than the Phenom II...

I'm considering the GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P for the X3 720. Is this board easy to overclock with? What about heat. I read that the stock cooler may not be adequate for overclocking. The other board I'm looking at is the GIGABYTE GA-MA790XT-UD4P.

If you're planning to unlock cores then don't buy the 720, go with the 550 instead...If you're only gonna overclock then it doesn't matter wich one although I bet you would get higher clocks out of the 550...
As for the mobo's, The GA-MA790XT-UD4P will obviously be better than the GA-MA770T-UD3P, but if you are looking for a budget build and you're not gonna overclock to the limit, then the UD3P would be great and you won't regret buying it...

I'm looking at a 10-20% overclock. Nothing extreme. So the GA-MA770T-UD3P may work fine. I'm tempted because there is a GA-MA770T-UD3P - Windows Vista 64 combo with a $25 discount. For gaming would a overclocked, unlocked 550BE be superior than a 720BE only overclocked?

Oh yeah! the unlocked 550 (if it unlocks, which it most likely will) clocked @3.2Ghz matches the performance of the phenom II X4 955...It's just a 955 chip with two locked cores...When you unlock the 550, the name will change, it will be a phenom II X4 B50. The only considerable drawback the GA-MA770T-UD3P has, is it only has one pci X16 slot, which means no Crossfire or SLI...other than that it's a great motherboard and should suit all your needs...

For people who want to unlock, here's a great guide I found for unlocking cores!

^Yeah, not a perfect guide but one that would answer a lot of questions for people curious about unlocking...
