Motherboards that can use 4x1gb dual sided ram

Hello there,

I recently *stupidly* assumed my gigabyte PS31 mobo could take 4 sticks of dual channel (double side) ram.

so I install it and it doesnt work, so I check my paper manual that i've had for about a year, no problems in there.... So then I check the website and lo and behold, you can't use 4 sticks of dual sided ram with the intel chipset.

so, what I need now, is if anyone can recommend a cheap/somewhat cheap motherboard that can use 4 x 1gb sticks of DS ram.

OCZ Platinum Revision 2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

Well, were you using the onboard graphics or a PCIE graphics processor? Looks like the G31 chipset has a problem with the memory configuration you are attempting. So. I have the G35 chipset running 4 x 1 GB PC6400 with no problem. If you do not need onboard graphics, the MB possibilities are many. Most recent Intel chipsets would include P35/45, X48/38.

I have an 8800gts, I tried checking pricewatch, but couldnt seem to find a lot of mbs with 4 slots for ram, and the ones I did, tried checking the manuals, but they didn't say much about having 4 sticks of DS ram.

My ASUS G35 works fine with 4 DIMMs. It is the open box shown here with other G35 boards available.

G45 is more recent and I'm sure supports your 4 DIMMS:

Then P45 (no onboard graphics) but you have an 8800 PCIE card:

And the x38/48's:

normally im pretty up to date on things, but i was surprised i couldnt put the 4 dual chan double sided on that mobo. hate having to spend more money just because they didnt put something in print, but ah well.

thank you for the suggestions, I appreciate it.

Looks like the G31 has some limitations not revealed till now. Unless it's just Gigabyte's board that is equipped with voltage regulators that do not support 4 DIMMs of DDR2 RAM. I would think that the VR's are the problem.

dunno, but it seriously sours me to gigabyte. I had wanted to buy 2 2gb kits when I orginally built it but glad I didn't. I would have had a brand new worthless mb, or 2g of new worthless ram..... guess this mb is going out the window or to the tech room at work so we can have target practice, lol.

I have several 'G' micro systems running as workstations. Currently 945G, 965G, ATI Radeon Express 200. Then I have the G35 setup with an 8800GTS/Vista 64/4 Gigs PC 6400 which we use as a photoshop/personal desktop system. The micro boards have their purpose which until recently was cheap workstation solutions. Now you can get a micro Mb like this. No onboard graphics, but a P45 chipset and Crossfire equipped if needed.

Actually, unless I'm really missing something, I think the above is possibly a good solution and would avoid the need to reinstall everything with a totally different motherboard.

I am in a similar situation except I've been sitting on the fence with teh choice longer than you. I have a Gigabyte P965-DS3 board which I really like but I originally bought 4x1Gb sticks of Gskill Ram(6400). Everything went great once I realized the reason the system wouldn't boot is because it did not like slots 2&4 occupied......sigh

Like you the website, when I purchased a good while back, did not indicate this as a problem.

I intend to buy 2x2Gb sticks at my next paycheck to finally get the 4Gb I intended originally on my system. Yes I'll be stuck with that 4Gb until I retire or pass the system down to a kid or the wife but by then I'll be wanting to build new anyway. In the meantime sure would like the extra Ram in Vista 64-bit though.

I think it is a viable solution although I see why you wouldn't want to toss the 2 sticks you have, it may cost close to the same or even less than another mobo with low Ram prices currently and surely would be less hassle. Just my 2p anyway, good luck with your choice.

I have the xtra 60-80 to get one to work, just dont like the idea of spending it. the fact they didnt bother putting that up or testing 4 sticks so long ago just ticks me off. they can giga-byte my arse.

I completely understand, exact same thing with the 965 board happened to me. One reason took me so long to make the choice, resented having to spring for more Ram again. In my case tho I can always build my son or daughter inexpensive systems in a couple months and use the 4x1 Gb sticks that would be laying around for them. I refuse to build another system (buying board would be akin to that for me) until Nehalim is full swing and I intend to go with an SLI capable intel chipset at that time :)  yah.

Make the choice that is right for you. Whatever that may be. I have been burnt by companies products before too and the sting takes quite a while to go away. :pfff:  Well g'luck with it :wahoo:
