I have an ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe, Phenom 9650 2.3Mhz, 3GB Corsair XMS2 6400 800MHZ, Sapphire Radeon 3870 512MB, 2 HD's on a RAID setup, and 2 DVD drives on IDE. I have done extensive research and have come to find out that the M2N-SLI Deluxe does not support PCIe 2.0 and from what I have read the Radeon 3870 DOES support PCIe 2.0. Now, is it worth it to get a new motherboard simply for PCIe 2.0? I do plan on upgrading the RAM and Video Card, so to me it makes sense to invest in a new one. Recommendations for a motherboard would be greatly appreciated, such as brand and chipset. ANY input is much appreciated! Oh, I forgot to mention that I have three (3) case cooling fans, a PCI GPU cooling fan unit, and a Artic Cooling 64FreezerPro CPU cooling unit, so I figure i need a mainboard with a lotta power slots. If I am wrong, please let me know.

Thank all of you fellow (any definitely smarter and better than I) hardware lovers!

From everything I have read and heard, very few GPUs actually can max out the bandwidth of 1.1 (let alone 2.0).

I read some tests on pcie 1.0 vs. 2.0 and the real world benefits of 2.0. I forgot where, but the conclusion was that the difference was not noticeable with mid-range cards, and was 1-2% beneficial with the highest end cards. Upgrading for that is very much not worth it.

RE your other upgrades:

I know that Core 2 cpu's get minimal benefit from faster ram. AMD with it's integrated memory controller might be different though. Look for some benchmarks that compare real application performance vs. results from synthetic tests of memory bandwidth etc... What will help you some is going from 3gb to4gb.

Only the cpu fan really needs to be run off the motherboard. The other fans can be run off the PSU. If you want to control the speeds, you can get a fan controller. Personally, I find it less obtrusive to have all the fans running at a constant speed so I don't hear them ramp up under load.

I decided on more RAM instead of a motherboard. I am leaning to towards corsair XMS2 DHX 4gb (2x 2gb sticks) to bring it up to 6GB of RAM.Should there be any problem running the XMS2 that is in my board already with the new RAM? They are both 6400 800MHz and 4-4-4-12 latency. Again, I have a M2N-SLI Deluxe running Vista Ultimate 64bit. I would go with 10666MHz but my board cant handle it.

I was also thinking: Is it possible to run the 10666 at 800mhz?

Thanks for your help geofelt!
