So I am going to be pulling the trigger on this new rig either today or first thing tomorrow, I want to get it b4 this weekend. I was going to go the nVidia route, but I switched my MOBO and GPU to let me use a HD 4850.

here are my specs.

MOBO:

Case:

I will also be getting artic silver 5 thermal compound.

I know that the GPU runs hot. Is it a good idea to get after market cooling for this puppy? It is about the only thing that I am really stuck on. Any comments please? Again, I will be pulling the trigger very soon :)

Two comments;
a. Yes, for the aftermarket cooling for the GPU. Do your build, get everything working, evaluate temps. Then, if required, put on an aftermarket gpu cooler.
b. If you are planning for a possible XFire in the future, then your mobo selection is less than optimal as it is not capable of 2X PCI-E 16. It will only do 2X PCI-E 8 in Xfire mode, for full performance you would need an X38 or X48 chipset based mobo.

Why oh why do I need to click all those links to see what you've got??? I'm not even paid here, you know... :pfff:

OK, here's your list, just in case others read this thread: P5Q, E8400, HD 4850, Corsair 4GB DDr2-800 5-5-5-18 $83, 750TX, WD6400AAKS, RC-690.

Now I'm less mad at you, because you did a great job picking the parts :)

Just change the motherboard to an x38 or x48 so you can support Crossfire properly without bottlenecks. The PSU and case already support it.

This RAM has better latencies:

Are you planning to overclock? If you are, you need a decent aftermarket cooler.

Cooler for the HD 4850:

Here's a quote from newegg:
Pros: Dropped my idle temps from 63C to 42C, and load temps from 85C to 50C. Operates at a constant fan speed which equals to setting the stock cooler on my Asus card to 30% fan speed.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Running 2 of these with 4850 crossfire in a system with a q6600 overclocked to 3.4ghz so my temps will be higher than some.

Nice pick there mate! Everything is good.

Just an information or two for you :

I know that P5Q and HD4850 come together in a combo, but
I see you have chosen a 750W PSU from Corsair, from this I can derive a conclusion that you wanna Xfire your system.
Did you know that P5Q is a P45 mobo, and P45 can not deliver 2 16x on Xfire, it can only give you 2 8x. So it is not a good choice for a Xfire system.

If you are looking for an optimum Xfire mobo, pick any of X38 or X48 mobos.
If you are NOT planning to go Xfire then stick with your mobo choice and you can reduce your PSU to 450W or 550W.

Hmmm...I don't see any CPU-Fan there mate except the bundled one. Are you not gonna OC your system? If you are planning so, get Xigmatek HDT-S1283, Zalman CNPS9700, or Scythe Orrochi.
