I have a similar problem, my PC was fine until I went to install Vista 64 bit. While it was installing, everything seemed to go fine, and I went to get a drink, came back, and the screen was black. I rebooted, and started to get the "BIOS auto recover from hard drive" message.
I've disconnected the hard drives and attempted to reboot from DVD and a flash drive, but it doesn't seem to attempt either. Just shows the message, and stops.
I've removed and replaced all the RAM, and the graphics card, no beeps, no changes.
I am not sure how to remove the CMOS battery, there's a little clip that kind of sticks out, but pushing/pulling lightly did not seem to move it at all, so if anyone can tell me how to get that out, I'll try that.
Any other ideas?
thanks,
bill
EDIT - I got the battery out, the clip had to go up to release it. But, nothing changed at all. Still same error

There should be shorting pins near the battery that will clear the CMOS. The clip should be pushed lightly away from the edge of the battery and the battery will pop up on that side.
Well, after trying almost everything, I finally pulled the CPU and replaced it with an older one, and Viola. I guess the CPU crapped out during Vista installation, or some hardware incompatibility occurred, I don't know.
You may have one of the Rev. 1 boards. If you look at the CPU support list you'll find that most of the 45nm/1333+ FSB CPUs aren't supported. The Rev 3.3 boards are ok.
