I installed windows 7 dual-boot with vista ult 64-bit. not a problem. both versions boot and run. however I have installed 6 sata drives. vista recognizes all 6 in explorer and device manager.
windows 7 however recognizes all 6 in device manager but will only display 5 in the computer drive explorer view. there is no method to access the (actually 5th sata) 750 gb drive. it cannot be accessed by any program I've tried so far. (xp also
recognized and accessed all 6 drives) speed disk 10 see's it as an unmounted drive.
any suggestions on a fix?
I have a asus rampage formula motherboard,
4 wd 320 hd drives,
1 corsair sshd 6th in sata chain (windows 7 installed on it now) vista ran fine on it, at least in recognizing all drives.
750 wd hd the 5th sata which is not accessable.
8 meg corsair ram
1000 watt corsair ps
asus 4850 video card.
running in non raid mode for the moment. I am not impressed with 7 especially since being screwed by the lack of the ult upgrade option, but that's just my vitrolic opinion and has no bearing on the current problem.

hmm, sounds interesting. sounds like a driver issue or your partition is somehow messed up. try repartitioning the 6th drive and make it active and see what happens

Thanks for the reply.
it isn't a driver issue and I would not want to lose the data in any way. that being said I think one of the updates did something, even though I tried using drive management when it 1st happened to assign a drive letter to the unmounted drive, but nothing would show as far as letters to assign [greyed out, i think]. must have rebooted 5-6 times trying it. after win7 went through an update it finally started showing drive letters to assign. I had left a msg on ms forum as well. it was about 2 weeks after that it worked. coincidence... you be the judge.

OK, I'm not clear whether you have solved this problem or not. My first thought was to check in Disk Management whether the "missing" 750 GB unit has a letter name assigned, but I see you already tried that. (I figured that, somehow during the dual-boot Install of Win 7 over Vista it had taken over one of the available letter names and left that one existing disk with no name.) But you ran into the problem that Win 7 Disk Management did not allow you to assign a new name because they were all greyed out. I'm used to having all 26 alphabet letters available for this purpose, but it seems you found you could not use all of them. Just to be sure, as I recall the list of letters used to be a scrolling list with all the ones already used greyed out. BUT you still could just type in a new unused letter in the box and use that. Is that how it's working for you, or not? Also, you seem to say that a recent Win 7 update suddenly made more letter names possible. So, did that allow you to assign a name and solve your problem?
