I built a HTPC in march and now have 6 HDDs varrying from 1-2 TB each holding my videos, music and pictures. Now w1th the 6th drive over 50% full I am looking for additional space, but at the same time wondering what the best (and affordable) option to back up this system. I have used single drive NAS in the past but I am very unfamiliar about setting up and using any RAID system. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

FreeNAS is free software to build yourself a NAS. You want to replicate your data elsewhere for safekeeping.
