just wondering i here people claiming that the gtx 280 performs on par with the 9800gx2 now but in the future it will perform much better, because of new drivers and as the games make more use of the gtx 280 1gig of memory and the bandwidth. true? wats ur opinion?

Maybe. Both the gtx 200 series and the HD 4000 series are very new, and significant driver improvements may come out to shake up the world of performance. More then likely the hardware now is being utilized fairly well- don't expect jumps of a dozen framerates in bechmarks ;). It will be interesting to see in the future how nvidia chooses to shape the gtx 280 models and releases, and see how far away from performance the move to further lower the price (one model on newegg is retailing for 399.99 with rebate). The ati 3000 release was supposed to have some significant driver improvements that would have shown their potential but that never really happened there. This is nvidia not ati... but you never know.

sure they can drop the prices more but how much would performance increase? drivers only increased performance a lil bit, was there a time when drivers increased performance a good amount? i really wanted to pick up a gtx 280 but the 9800gx2 seems to beat it alot.

Usually, the first driver release is to correct bugs, with a few driver increases also. This changes with subsequent driver releases as theres less bugs and the emphasis is more on performance.

Definitely the gtx 280. Performs much better under heavy loads and with AA. The 9800 gtx2 is very fast but the 280 is a lot more powerful for the one card.
