Will an ethernet hub fix my problems?

Hello all, I have a work computer at home which includes a VPN/Firewall and IP phone. Currently my cable modem is attached directly to this. I would like to use this cable modem to provide my home with wireless internet connectivity(for my laptop) and have tried to put a Belkin router upstream from the VPN/Firewall but could not get it to work due to not knowing the ports to open in the router for this configuration to work. I was wondering if using a D-Link Ethernet 5-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Switch (~$30) would be the solution to all my problems?!? Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
