Im using windows xp and unable to connect to Brother HL-1440 printer

Hello,
I'm using Windows XP and unable to connect to Brother HL-1440 printer. I have the USB plugged into my laptop but plug n play doesn't list this printer. I tried to choose another printer Brother hl-1250 it connected and printed a test page just fine, but prints something different from what I type.
