Hello. Got my new inexpensive software raid controller today!
Win 7 ultimate running on 'backup' system with 7 500gb and 1 250gb (for system) drives.
Now I want to set up some form of network syncronization from my main pc, so that any changes I make on my own pc would be reflected on the other pc.
Is there a built in feature for this purpose, or do I have to get one of the programs mentioned here : http://serverfault.com/questions/6 [...] work-drive Or perhaps something else entirely?
I'm fairly good at scripting, so I could use robocopy for it, but I'd kinda prefer something that thinks for me ; I didn't pick linux after all.
In theory you're right, but in reality you aren't really.
2009 I've had 7 incidents where a failing drive on a hardware raid controller made the OS crash (server 2008 R2). And while I had a bad sata cable at home in a system with a software controller, nothing crashed. It just stalled for a bit until data could be read again. Had my controller at home been hardware, then sure I would've known what was wrong instead of just 'that something was wrong' but also my system might've crashed.
Anyway I know software controllers are not the best option, but I built my backup server from spares. The only new thing I bought was the controller and 4 nuts I needed to attach the fan assembly to the case side.
In any event - the software controller I bought is RUBBISH!
Sisoft sandra measured between 23 and 14MB/Sec on the physical read benchmark (4x500gb in raid5). In contrast the nforce 550 board mustered 135-85MB/Sec with 3x500gb in raid5.
I asked Delock (the company) support about this performance, but they've not yet had time to reply.
Controller's based on a sil3114 - dunno if it's a chip limitation, or the vendor just screwed up, or perhaps it just is slow as hell in raid5!
