Hello. I have a strange problem with my router and I am not sure what is wrong.
I have a cable modem connected to a non-wireless Linksys router. There are 2 computers connected to the router (both running Windows XP).
Everything worked fine, then last night before I went to sleep I shut down the computers (and they both had a Windows update install as they were shutting down).
This morning I turn on both and they will not connect to the internet.
I tried connecting both computers one at a time to the modem directly, and the internet works.
I also tried resetting the modem and the router, but it didnt help. So I assume something is wrong with the router not being able to communicate with the modem.
Both computers can see the router and I can log into the routers administrative menu.
- Use the pc which is getting internet directly to modem.
- Connect it to the router and then router to the modem.
- Access router's setup page.
- Under Setup look for MAC address clone. It's in line with Basic Settings.
- Click on Clone your pc's MAC and then save settings at the bottom.
- Power cycle modem the router.
Usually on a cable connection, just a power cycle will do the trick. But theoritically, cable ISP have this MAC table wherein only MAC addresses on the list can access internet. You pc's LAN card is the one being recognized by the ISP's MAC table(that's why it's working directly to the modem) and not the router that is why it is needed to be cloned to be identified by the ISP.
