OC temperatures?

My CPU is a core2duo E6300 L2 revision OCed to 2.3GHz and 1.184 to 1.296v, with a small cheap Thermaltake aluminum CPU cooler and heatsink. (better than stock I think)


However, I'm getting different temperature readings for my programs. Which should I trust?

Real Temps reads my idle temperature as 29'C and 30'C with 61 and 60 "distance to TJ max"

HW monitor reads my idle temperature as 40'C and 42'C

Getting the "real" temperature is an art. The best that most of us are going to do is obtain a temperature T1 prior to a change (e.g. better CPU cooler, new fan) and then obtain temperature T2 after the change to see if the change helped.

EDIT: If you are not using Arctic Silver 5 then you should be.

I'm actually using the stock thermal paste.

I recently got some MX2 (better than Artic Silver 5 from the reviews) and plan to apply it to this rig and my i7 rig

Try another program like SpeedFan, or CoreTemp and post the readings.

Read the temperature guide. Everything is explained there. Don't trust any program until you know why the software reports different temperatures while using the exact same data source.

From what I read, HWmonitor has info on the diode beneath the cpu (tjunction), whereas realtemp has info on the cpu temp exterior (tcase?).

HWMonitor does both Tjunction (reading taken from the Digital Thermal Sensors embedded in the cores) and TCase (diode between the cores). Real Temp reads only the DTS, as does Core Temp, which is why both only work on newer CPUs that use a DTS.
