I have a few of questions about wireless networking.
- I assume you can have a WLAN that's not connected to the Internet. Is that true? I want to setup a WLAN on a remote parcel of land where there is currently no Internet access. I'm assuming devices connected to the access point will be able to see/talk to each other wirelessly?
- The parcel of land is roughly one square mile. It has a house at near the center of the property. I'd like to setup the access point there, and boost the signal in order to get nearly complete coverage throughout the property. How do I go about doing that? Do I use a standard N wireless router, and add a booster and omni-directional antenna? Any hardware recommendations for this?
- The main purpose for this project is to monitor parts of the property with network cameras. I'd like to have a dozen or so wireless IP cameras all connected to the WLAN, and a server at the house also connected to the WLAN (probably just directly connected to the wireless router). The cameras can upload images they capture to an FTP server. I would setup the main PC at the house to be that FTP server. Then I want to be able to view the cameras and access the FTP server from a laptop from anywhere on the property. I imagine if I have static IP addresses for each camera and the server that this should be possible. Is my assumption correct?
- If we ever do get Internet access there, I'd like to access the cameras from anywhere. I assume I'd have to get N number or static IP addresses from our service provider? Is there a better way?
