When opening my Dell desktop computor, the display does not fill out the total space available, leaving about a one inch black border all around.

How do I enlarge it to fill the available space?

Right-click on the desktop, go to Properties, Settings tab. Move the resolution slider all the way to the right. If you have a CRT, you may need to adjust the image size using the menus in the monitor to fill out to the edges more. Some LCDs also need to have this done if the resolution does not fix it.
