Have a used PC with 4 USB ports. However nothing I plug in to any of them is seen by WinXP or linux. Must be hardware issue. Where do I look? Checked bios (ami) usb config. Support and controllers are enabled but when drive is inserted before boot "devices enabled" still says none.

Most likely it is a hardware issue—if you haven't updated your mobo and chipset drivers. What's your mobo?

Are these USB ports on the front panel? It may be that the cable from the front panel isn't connected to the USB headers on the motherboard.
