Games stuttering

Last response: in Graphics & Displays
Share

I have recently setup a new system and am having an issue with games. For the first 5 minutes they run fine, but then i start to get stuttering every few seconds with the frame rates dropping to single figures. At first i wondered if it was the built in audio card as the sound popped as well, but i changed card and ran without and still had the same issue.

Any ideas would be appreciated as otherwise it is a nice system that just needs to game.

I had heard that on the vram but even on old games like Battlefield 2 & 2142 its stuttering which worked fine on my old 256mb card at the same resolutions.

What model was your old card?

Check out this old thread for more details on the 8800 series memory management bug. It was supposedly resolved at some point with a driver update, at least for DX9 games. You'll even see me raving in the last post that the driver fixed my issue in WiC. Well it didn't fix the issue in other games, and I eventually had to drop the 320MB GTS for a 512MB 8800GT.

I haven't recommended an NVIDIA card with <512MB since :)

I have run between a few, the 7600GS with 256 and the Radeon X1600 with 256mb. I only game at resolutions of 1024x768 or 1280x1024. Before i got this card i was running an 8400gs on really low settings on BF2142 and had the same issue so wonder if something else is amiss.

SpeedFan or Core Temp will work, although I admit I haven't played with any of these utilities in quite some time. The joys of setting up a stable long-term overclock :)

I don't recall the specific operating temperatures for Conroe, but a quick Google should suffice.

Ok guys you can all slap me and call me stupid. Guess who left the plastic shield over the heatsink when he installed it :)  Guess i know why i repair computers for a living and not my own :)

Thanks for all the help :)
