I just built my first computer a couple days ago. I am using an Intel e8400 on a Foxconn P45A-S motherboad. Everything is working fine but the processor is idling at ~55 celsius. When I first built the computer it was at 77 idle and I removed the thermal paste and put on artic silver. I have checked the heatsink many times and I feel like it is on tight. I still need to get the processor to a lower temperature. When I run games on it the temperature is about 70 degrees celsius within 10 minutes of playing and that is too high. Does anyone have any suggestions to things I may have done wrong or should check for? I am going to call Intel tomorrow when their tech support is open. However, it would be great if I could resolve this issue on my own. Thanks.

55 idle seems hot.

The stock intel coolers should be able to do the job, but they are not the best.
You may want to invest in an oem cooler like the Xigmatek s1283 .

The usual reason for this is that one of the pushpins is not solidly all the way through the motherboard and locked. The only way to check is to take the motherboard out of the case and look at it from the back. Since the cooler feels secure, this may not be your problem.

Did you apply the proper amount of tim? A small dab, about the size of a grain if rice is about right. Too much will act as an insulator, while not enough is obviously not good either.

Is the cooler fan running? It should ramp up as the cpu heats up. Check the bios for your cpu fan control options.

If your ambient room temperature is hot, the cpu will also start out hot.

How is your case cooling? Remove the side panel and direct a small house fan at the innards. If this helps a lot, then you have case cooling issues.

Lastly, how are you measuring temperatures? There seem to be many ways, and they do not all agree.

---good luck---

Thanks for responding.

I think the first thing I am going to do is remove the motherboard and make sure all the pushpins are solidly locked. I really dislike these plastic things and its possible it feels tight but isn't in there right.

I applied the amount of tim that the artic silver site suggested which was a skinny line across both processors.

The cooler fan is running but I am not sure if it is going up in speed. So I will check the bios for that.

The ambient room temperature is normal and the case is in the 30s. I have checked the temperature through the bios and the program EVEREST.
