Hi there, started to look around for upgrades to my palit 8800gt which to be fair is a great card but looking for a change before the re sale value of my 8800gt is next to nothing, very funds limited but would go to the 4850, but is this going to be worth the trouble of selling old card on well known auction site, I would like to game at the native rez of my screen 1440x900 but unfortuanatly in UT3 for example the fps dips too low in the busy maps eg, 40 or under this is the case as well for stalker etc and so im running it at 1280x800 which is fine but not ideal. So is it worth staying with the 8800gt for now or going for the 4850 (or similar) ? thanks

How much are you thinking you can get for you 8800 GT right now?

Any chance you have an SLI motherboard and PSU? Two 8800GT's in SLI should be just slower then the 9800GX2, so they should be about as fast as the 4870. Seeing as the 8800GT is now around $100ish, this should be a cheap upgrade if you already have the motherboard and PSU.

If you don't, try to get the 4850. Should be a fine card for 1440x900. I would have thought your 8800GT was good for that res also. Any issues with the rest of your build? Perhaps you need more ram or something else?

I agree and I'm looking also, but I have no sli mobo. I was thinking 4870 down the line.
To the OP about your value of your 8800GT, mine is down to $135 (after rebate) at the egg and I paid $279 for mine the 1st day they were out 9 months ago.

Sli would be a great idea but Unfortunatly my mobo dosnt support it, its just while in most games your correct its great but when it gets to large maps like in ut3 or huge races in grid it does seem to struggle, possibly it is the rest of my system, I have a c2d e6750 @3.0ghz and 2gb dual channel crucial 667 mhz with vista 32bit premium? I would of thought thats half decent for gaming at this rez with some aa+af :)

You should have a fine system, I wonder why its not. I wonder if 2GBs of RAM isn't enough to handle these large maps. The C2D at 3GHz should be good enough, and the 8800GT at 1440x900 should be fine to. Unless someone else has the answer, try the 4850. If that doesn't work, then you have some other problem.

From what I've seen the 4580 is a good improvement over the 8800gt. Especially when everything is turned up.....On my computer Crysis and a few other games do shutter when everything is turned up.....I'm looking for a replacement myself.....personally....even though I have an sli board. I like to use only one card....I'm getting the 4870 myself...

Yeah it possibly is ram related, my main prob is i like the detial levels to be highest :) so perhaps its just me being fussy, damn these new gfx cards with tempting prices, I used to run gfx cards to the bitter end once, I had a agp radeon 9600 and p4 3.ghz till 2007 haha, annoying thing is Id love to go for the 4870 but funds wont permit this unless i 'forget' to pay the council tax which would not be advisable so I guess ill get a 4850, only to discover an amazing radeon 5850 with double the performance and half the price :D

If you like to play with EVERYTHING on high, its probably the 8800GT. The 4850 will handle this better, along with AA/AF.
